Wooding 14x5.5 snare - advice?

Loading...

Hi all,

I'm wondering if you could give me some advice here, I have a Wooding 36 Metal snare. It was the first snare drum i ever owned, it came with a second hand kit that i acquired when i first started playing drums 8 years ago. (owing a vintage snare drum at the age of 8.... that's got to count for something? haha)

Recently however the snare strainer (please correct me if i am not using the correct terminology.. i've been playing for years however i'm not the most technically - minded person when it comes to drums) has broken, i was wondering if it would be a good idea to buy a new snare strainer (which would require drilling new holes in the shell to fit) or whether it was worth anything in it's current condition, bearing in mind that the actual metal of the snare strainer has broken off, and that it is missing a spring?

I have all the parts for it except the snares themselves, however the muffler has been repaired, and as i mentioned before the snare strainers are broken.

Attached is a link to some photos.

Many thanks for any advice you can give me,

Kieran

Kieran, Fist off welcome to the forum. Yes you are correct on the term snare strainer, If you can not find an original wooding snare strainer to replace your old one, and are going to use a different replacement, Don't drill holes in your shell. Just make or have someone make you a metal adapter plate to fit the original holes in the shell. If you understand what I an telling you?

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I can honestly say that idea never occurred to me..... brilliant!! although how would I connect the new strainer to the adaptor though? Would I solder it? because surely the strainer would have to be as close to the shell as possible otherwise the snares won't be long enough? or would I get snares of a larger size than the drum? (go easy... I've replaced countless heads but never had to replace snares/snare strainers....)
