Hi all,
I have managed to put together a vintage Slingerland set (see attached pic). I have a silver cloud snare (which seems to be a lifeform unto itself - honestly an amazing drum) and some late 50's toms and bdrum. None of the drums match in color but I'm really just going for sound at this point.
For the toms I am using Gauger RIMS mounts and REMO Fibraskyn heads top and bottom. I stripped off all extraneous hardware.
I'm interested in trying out wood rims on my toms. I'm wondering if any of you have tried wood rims on 50's-60's era 3-ply (with maple reinforced hoops) Slingerland toms?
Are thin shell vintage drums hung with RIMS mounts prone to warping when the metal rims are replaced with wood rims?
Can you recommend a wood rim to try?
Is there much of a difference in sound between the various wood rims available? There is certainly a big difference in price.
I love these drums. I am a better drummer because these drums inspire me. I like a warm sounding drum and a good rimshot accent on a tom.. Ok ok I think they look good too :)
Thanks and all the best,
Pete.
