Will an Acrolite sound better with new/different snare wires?

Loading...

I have an Acrolite that I am having trouble placing a manufacture date to, but it's a pre-battleship with a 222 serial number. It came to me with Rockers heads on it so I'd like to assume they are originals from the era but not original to the drum. Anyway it sounds pretty good, just gave it a nice rehab and changed the heads etc. The snares that came on this are 12-wire. I was having trouble dialing in a good sound after the head replacements (was basically getting a lot of drum with not enough snare, if that makes an sense - like when you make the snares way too tight) so I was considering swapping them out with a set from Puresound. Will I gain anything cool by doing that?

I always seek out originals for mine. even if they are stretched a tad or missing a strand, I find them to sound better. but, I also love original heads as well. which heads did you go with on the acro?

Can't really answer if Better, when I bought mine the original wires had lots of twisting... so I did not do a comparison.. New heads & a 20 strand Puresound it sounds very nice indeed..

Cheers

There are quite a few models of Puresound snares and each has it's own characteristics. The Blaster series will certainly give you more snare sound without putting a ton if wires on the head. I have found that I like them on drums that are intended to be used when tuned up in their upper ranges and bright tonalities but not as much when trying to obtain a more earthy tone with looser tunings. That is just my experience. If you are looking for more snare sound, another option would be the 42 strand snares (I think they are 42 but may be wrong). That is a lot of snare wire on a drum.

While it costs a bit, one should probably experiment with multiple snare sets to have a better idea if what each does and does not do. Your preferences and musical tastes are very personal so it is always difficult to gauge what will or will not work for you based on forum opinions.

Experiment.

Puresounds have worked well on some of my drums. Pearl wires have also worked a treat.

I tend to stay in the 20 and under range for strands. I have a bunch of 42's down in the basement that didn't work for me (or probably the snare beds on my drums).

I really like the Puresound Concert Series 12 strand wires -- model C1412.

They're especially good for drums with narrower beds. Dark and dry.

On an Acrolite the 20 strand Puresound Blasters are a great match too.

The originals are twisting on mine too. I think they sound alright, but then again I'm not really comparing to much else and my '59 pioneer has a set of 12-strand wires also.

I think I'll get something else to try and see then. As far as heads, I'm just using Ambassador coated and hazy on the bottom.

What would have originally been on an Acrolite from 1967 and what's the closest match today?
