Why I'll Never Find Good Drums in an Antique Store Last viewed: 11 hours ago

I've noticed that individuals or shops that are selling drums but don't necessarily know much about them label them by whatever they see stamped on the head as in this case -- "old Remo drum".

I've noticed the same thing on CL. A set of blue sparkle Rogers and a couple old snares as of late. All "Remos".

Two years ago my father told me of a pawn shop in a small town had a set of Yamaha drums...but said they looked older and had an inch of dust on them. I got out a few of my old catalogs, and he pointed to the wrap. I took off that Saturdayand purchased a '65 Slingerland kit in BDP, with a WMP Ludwig Jazzfest, (Yamaha batter). On the dried up piece of masking tape it stated, "Yamaha drums for sale".
Amen. Whenever I am searching my usual classified listings, I always include searches for "Remo", "Evans" and "Weather King"... ever since I bought a beautiful old WFL kit that was listed as "Weather King Drum Set" due to the text on the heads ;)

I think you just found a good drum in an antique store! ;)
Any drum is a good drum to find in an Antique store.
Buy it.

Wow, just shows my ignorance of any drum older than a couple of decades. Should there be some identification on this (badge)? How would one clean it up? No snare wires in this either. Maybe I could get it for $75...seems like the owner is clueless as I was. Well at least I knew it wasn't a Remo drum. Anyway, thanks for the insights.... :)
Oddball beat me to this: yes, look carefully on one of the hoops, probably on the batter side. There should be some engraving there. This one looks "antique" enough that it may be really light and hard to see.
I had a 10-lug Ludwig once that was in much worse shape. A LOT of rust on all parts. I "buffed" the rust with a very light-weight buffing tip on my Dremel -- and in some places it took it all the way down to the brass -- but did look much, much better. I put new American Vintage heads (Aquarian) on both sides and much newer snare wires -- and still got almost $500 for it on eBay. And this one was a "freebie" -- got it from someone who was giving things away when cleaning up a garage!
So, IMO it's probably worth the $125, but shoot if it were me I'd go back and offer the $75... who knows, they might take it?
Oh yeah, as to brand: I'd say there is a good chance it's Ludwig or Leedy, but really can't tell for sure. There probably wasn't a badge on it to begin with...

I've run into this the other-way-around, too: Someone has an old beat-up MIJ drum with a Ludwig head on it and they think it's a Ludwig, then! And, they've had a friend (you know, a friend who had a friend who played guitar in some "garage" band) who reinforced the idea that this is an old Ludwig drum worth a LOT of money!!
I've seen this at flea markets, antique shops, and mostly at garage sales or Craiglist postings...
