Why burgundy sparkle? Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Loading...

I've always wondered why burgundy sparkle was considered a holy grail finish by collectors, specifically round badge guys. Is it just because it was more uncommon than the other finishes? Champagne sparkle's ubiquity doesn't seem to have hurt its value 50 years later.

For me, burgundy sparkle is a dull looking finish, not as eye-catching under stage lights as the brighter sparkles. And I associate dark red finishes with the enormous number of wine red wrapped Chinese import kits that have flooded the entry market over the last 20 years. Same with the dark red lacquer Superstars from the 80's. Not the same obviously, but that's what I think of when I see it.

So, in your opinion, why is burgundy sparkle so sought after?

Had a 18" Lud BD in that once...that's it!

Personally, I like the burgundy sparkle. I used it on a faux Premier project set and like the way it looks.

And it has an 18" bd.

Well what makes you say that? Mel Lewis, Art Blakley and Elvin Jones all played burgundy sparkle RB kits so some of the rarity was probably created because of them...

But nonetheless a good question, I don't think so not too much anymore is it rare? The prices on regular Burgundy sparkle RB kits are about the same as a regular wrap RB kits... and I've seen a few burgundy sparkle Gretsch RB kits floating around but I will say this... it took me several years to find myself a 100% all original burgundy sparkle Gretsch RB bop kit.

Now as far as holy grail goes... I own a real 1963 burgundy sparkle RB bop kit that I feel is very unique and could be "special order" because it doesn't have the Pratt muffler or standard factory cymbal mount ever installed on it when 99.9% of them did...

And plus... what really stands out about my burgundy sparkle RB kit is that it has the original W&A rail mount factory located at the 12 o'clock position which is why, I truly believe my burgundy sparkle RB bop kit (is the holy grail) and COULD HAVE once belonged to a famous jazz drummer... unfortunately my hunch is currently non-documented but both E.J. and A.B. played RB kits with this very unique configuration which is supported with several photographs showing the 12 o'clock position but I've never seen this configuration in regular hands past or present.

Over many many years of searching, I only know of a few (less then 5 original RB bop kits) with original 18" Gretsch bass drums that has the factory 12 o'clock W&A rail mount position and none of them are burgundy sparkle.

Burgundy was very expensive, and considered to be very rare, up until maybe 3 years ago, when it started showing up everywhere. For decades, it rarely came up for sale, but then the skies opened up and it started raining Burgundy Sparkle Gretsch and Ludwigs! Burgundy Camco, however, still seems to be quite rare.

I think Burgundy Sparkle was probably the most common RB 18-12-14 finish. I've had 4 kits, and know of at least 3 others. Lots of RB 20-12-14 Burgundy sets, too. It must have been very popular among jazz drummers back then.

De gustibus. All vintage kits are beautiful!

That said, I share your personal taste about wine red shades. It just says "CB700" to me.

BTW, my first kit was a CB700, and I still own it and use it. But I took the beat-to-hell wine red metallic wrap off of it and put on pistachio sparkle vinyl.

But If I got a fantastic deal on a vintage American kit in burgundy sparkle, I would probably love it.
