Who's using a '20s - '30s DeLuxe or BB? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

I'm wondering if many of you are actually using a 1920s or 1930s DeLuxe or Black Beauty (or equivalent). I know a lot of these drums sit on a shelf or in a showcase, but I'm really curious if many if you regularly play yours.

A few questions:

1. How do you use the drum? (gigs, recording, etc.)

2. What heads are you using?

3. What snare wires are you using and why?

I recently took the plunge and have been scouring the interwebz for information on using these drums. I must be looking in the wrong places because I'm not finding much other than show and tell.

I did find this awesome video that Steve Maxwell made demonstrating a DeLuxe and it sounds fantastic. I dig Steve's playing too!

Here's mine [pic]. It's my main snare, also have a Pioneer. Right now I have a vintage Emperor on there but the best I think was the reverse black dot, "CS" [control sound].

For 12 years I used a 1923 Standard, same shell as BB w/o engraving. You can hear it on "The Flame" and "Don't Be Cruel" by Cheap Trick. I used a Ludwig white coated medium head on top. I used regular Ludwig wires. I played the drum in concerts and recording.

I recently purchased a 20's 4x14 (chrome plated, not a BB) with the two piece shell and I do plan to gig with it (insofar as the paltry number of gigs I'm doing these days). So far I've only had the chance to use it once but will be using it again later this week with a set I just completed. So far I've been very happy with it.

The garden variety chrome and nickel plated ones are much less expensive than a BB with the same brass shell and sound so perhaps a bit more practical to take out into the real world.

My regular snare for numerous gigs has been a 20's Standard, 6.5"x14" with 8 lugs. Same drum as the BB. I set it up with a hazy Remo Ambassador snare side head, and lately a Remo Vintage Ambassador batter. I use 16 strand Ludwig

snares as they fit the narrower snare beds perfectly. I also have 50's WFL nickel over brass triple flanged hoops on the old girl.

It's been around the block but it plays as nice as it sounds.

Not a black beauty or anything, but still a rather good drum. 1930s Slingerland Professional. I will gig with it, if I ever have the time to be in a band.

N.O.B., 6.5x14. Got it from Music-Go-Round for a song. Listed as "Chrome snare drum, no name." The nickel is almost 100% intact. It was missing the lever on the strainer, so I made a new one. Some day I'll get it nickel plated. One of the best snares I've ever heard.

Nice drum!

I saw on Adrian Kirchler's (AK Drums) Facebook page that he has awesome looking NOB handles for Slingerland 3-point strainers. They even have the Slingerland USA PATS PENDING stamp on them. He has the thumb screw too. I want to order one myself.
