Which size tom to add: 10" or 14"? Last viewed: 2 days ago

I have a 1977 Rogers kit with a 12", 13", and 16" tom that came with it. I took an old steel snare drum and took the snare unit off and made that a 14" tom. The thing is that I want to make all my toms Rogers so they all sound the same. I have been debating whether to get a 14" tom or a 10" tom. I usually like to tune my toms medium-high in pitch so they cut through. The thing is that I don't want to add a 10" tom and move my 13" down so it's right next to my 16" because the interval would be pretty wide. I was thinking about just getting a 14" tom, but they're quite a bit of money on eBay.

I like the idea of a 10" because I could have a higher pitch drum to cut through a band, but a 14" floor tom would have a good interval with the 16" tom.

Bunch of hits, but no replies likely due the subjective nature of the answer...Personally, I would look for a 10". They were available in the timeframe (Rogers had begun to limit the color choices) and you would have a solid assortment.10, 12, 13, 16, 22 or 13, 16, 22 or 10, 12, 22...Generally, a 13 / 14 combo would sonically match better with an 18 and 24. Just 2 cents worth...

personally my aim isn't good enough for anything that small. which is good cuz musically i'm not a fan of those things either.

not sure that's even worth 2 cents.

Not sure if Rogers made many 15" marching snares, but that should work pretty well between a 13" and 16", especially with their shallower depth (they're typically 12x15).

Add the 10"er it will work better with your current set up and be used more than a 14"er.

Since you're talking about drums that are not made anymore and may not be easy to find to begin with, I would grab whichever one came up first and try to keep a few extra dollars handy in the event the other size came along on down the road in hopes of scooping it up as well to have a nice full complement of sounds/set ups to choose from.

That being said, are you comfortable with the placement of your current 14"? If not, that may tell you how you would feel about a matching 14" in its place. Just a thought.....
