What wood are my Rockers? Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Hey folks,

I have a set of Ludwig Rockers I'm selling. My question is how can I determine which wood they're made from. Some research would suggest they're 4-ply Maple but I want to be sure before listing them. I had a matching set with the same wrap & badges but that wood looked like pressed fiber with steel bass hoops. These look like Maple with wood bass hoops but I'm told they could be Poplar or something called Basswood..? They sound WAY better than the speckled looking fiber wood did. I'm attaching a pic so if anyone can tell me, I'd really appreciate it. These are up for sale if interested. Thanks, cool forum by the way!!

Speckled shell interiors are called granitone, they were on the lower end rocker II's.

They were both 4 ply "American hardwood veneer" the rocker II shells just had ugly wood grain, so they sealed them with granitone, and outfitted them with lower end hardware.

I like Drums...
1963 Ludwig Downbeat Champagne Sparkle
1964 Leedy (Slingerland) Blue n Silver Duco
1964 Ludwig Club Date Sparkling Silver Pearl
1966 Ludwig Super Classic Sparkling Silver Pearl
1968 Gretsch round badge modern jazz orange stain
1972 Slingerland 85N Pop outfit Light Blue Pearl
1976 Ludwig Vistalite clear
1981 Gretsch SSB Gran Prix Rosewood
1987 Yamaha Turbo Tour Custom Mellow Yellow
1991 Pearl Export Ferrari Red

Yep, that's what I've heard, and seen.

Thank you folks! I'm not a huge Ludwig guy, I run Pearl Master-Classic MMX's but I do have this Acrolite snare in this package I'm selling. I personally like a Maple snare but I see folks asking & getting $150-$200 for these Acrolites. What's the deal? Are they really desirable? Maybe I should sell it separately & stick an old Sound Percussion snare with this kit.

Your knowledgeable input would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

Acrolite snares WERE a bang for your buck snare, but the word is out on them and people seem to think they are worth a lot.

However ludwig made a lot of them. So a blue and olive badged acro is in no way rare, ask fishwaltz.

But they are sweet sounding.

I agree. Also it is funny that Ludwig recently did a "re-issue" of their famous Acrolite (with matte chrome lugs/hoops instead of shiny chrome, however). The problem there is, Ludwig wants $250 for a new one. Who is going to pay that when you easily get an original Acrolite for around $100?

Yours could be 4 ply 82-84 Rockers made in Chicago. In 82 I toured the Chicago plant and watched your exact kit being built.

This pic is a 1986 rocker one set with what looks like to me the last of the original Chicago hardware. 4 ply maple. In 86 They made a Rocker II set with your lugs but no were near as nice as yours.

Mine was a hideous worn black cortex basically falling off the drums purchased for $200 at Purdue University campus. They had black badges, grey Lud cote, and non rocker original Ludwig hardware. They got a Mod re wrap. So their Rockers but their mods, so I call them mockers.

I'm with you on that one. I was in the same situation not long ago.why pay $30K for a Chevy Camaro that looks like a 1968 when I can get the real thing for less.
