What Song and Drummer Inspires You? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Phil Ehart - "Incomudro - Hymn to the Atman" off Song For America, track 6 - very well done. Though they are a tad dated now, those drums sound amazing. Oh yeah - he's pretty good too.......(I hope they hear my sarcasm).

Very under-rated drummer.

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

the great one JHB

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Sorry to post twice in a row, I but want to give honor to another great drumming inspiration - Tony Oladipo Allen of N I G E R I A. Allen presented to the world what we know today as "Afro-Pop" drumming. As bandleader and drummer for the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Tony Allen's approach to the standard drum kit was as a master of African polyrhythms simulating African native drums, rather than with usual 'traditional western' drum set technique. All while driving a big band performing funk and jazz. Still with us today, he defies imitation. He "re-wrote the book" on how to play a drum kit.

was worth posting twice in a row! Tony Allen is a master!!!

David Garibaldi (Tower of Power): mind blowing syncopation!

Adam Deitch (Lettuce, Scofield): great time and chops, innovative!

John Blackwell (Prince): Fat funky grooves in good taste, though Prince holds his own on a kit too!

Billy Martin has been mentioned, but hey, he's woth mentioning more than once!

Sly Dunbar brought reggae drumming to a whole new level and is a great session player for all kinds of other styles too!

Zigaboo Modeliste (the Meters): slippery but tight, often imitated but never equalled!

1964 Ludwig Champagne Super Classic
1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
1977 Rogers Big R Londoner 5 ebony
1972/1978 Rogers Powertone/Big R mix ebony

Pearl B4514 COB snare ( the SC snare)
Pearl Firecracker
PJL WMP maple snare

Sly Dunbar's playing on Bob Dylans "Infidels" album is so clean and precise.

I have half-responded to this many times lately only to delete it, thinking, "Am I really inspired by this person?" Odd that a question on a forum really pushed me to reflect that hard upon myself and my "style". I never really thought I had a style, as it were. I pretty much thought I just kept the beat and moved on with it. Until recently...

Within my band, my "style" has become much more subtle, almost non-existant in some songs which has left me questioning what am I doing here? Two weeks ago I sat in with my friend at Open Jam, and for the first time in months I really let loose. It was a very inspired session that had the bar on it's feet...for open mic night. Tony, the guitarist, has GREATLY improved his skills since I saw him last. The bassist was layin it down smooth, and best I can come to a big name drummer was Keith Moon. Very busy, very driven, very much so a part in creating as the piece moved, very animated...it was amazing. I was really inspired. I was compared to Keith Moon by the other drummer in the audience, an unusual and extremely high honor for me. I was pulling off fills that were not practiced and not in my typical trick bag which left me scratching my head about where they came from. Such a change from the mundane stuff I pull in the band. In fact, I get so bored in the band that I often drop a beat just to see if I am really doing anything, or to avoid sleeping. Since then, I have started picking Moon out in different tracks and find myself floored at how busy he really was. While he was not the most technical drummer, he had some serious chops.

Tonight is open mic night again, and I will once again see if I can catch lightning in a bottle with these fellas, or if it was just a once in a while stroke of inspiration that came over me.
