Our keyboard player mentioned tonight that a guy gave him a "very heavy" Ludwig chrome snare over 30 years ago in exchange for some work. He also mentioed that it's deeper than most other snares.... Got me thinking that I may need to make him an offer when i see the drum on thursday. If it's a 60's era keystone 6.5" COB, what's the approximate value? There are no ebay completed listings for comparison. Thx jim

a 6.5 will ring the bell strong, especially if its in nice condition. some of the overall vintage market seems to be down right now. but an item like this is always gonna do well. not seeing many keystone 6.5s around these days and certainly not a 6.5. on ebay, i'd say it would fetch 1500 easily.

Might be way off,but I say closer to a G note....
normally, i'd agree. the last couple of keystone 6.5 ludalloys sold for over 1500. one for 1699 i think. if this one is collector quality, someone may dig deep into the old wallet. hard to say and changes on any given day as we all know.

Very helpful. Now that he has my interest, it will probably be a CB 700. Laughing H

If it is of any help I purchased a keystone 6.5 COB SS for $1k in Steve Maxwells last year (May I think). I couldn't help myself, the things a beast. Anyway I worked out the currency in Sterling and for me it was pretty reasonable, especially as I can put it towards my Tax! Being a pro-muso has its benefits sometimes.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
I bought a legit 6.5" COB Supraphonic, or 402, or whatever you want to call it, on Ebay about 16 months ago for under $400. It was pre-serial, crimped beds, early imperials, round knob TC, the whole nine. The catch is that it had significant extra holes on two of the panels, and not the strainer/butt panels either! The auction was not descriptive, the seller didn't know what he had, but a few observant ebayers obviously did, including me, the winning bidder. I cleaned it up and played it for a while (sounded incredible!), but I needed to pay some bills, so I sold it to a fellow in Austin, TX through CL, and he was happy to pay $425. I wish I would've just kept it. :(
Not sure if this narrative helps, since I'm talking about a modified drum, but I agree that the market is holding its ground with these COB Luddies.
Here it is:
