WFL Superclassic muffler Last viewed: 6 days ago

I think at some point the muffler was replaced on this snare (it has new heads and snares, but the rest of the drum appears original or at least period correct). A FB vintage drum guru told me the muffler was a Kent. I have since run across many similar drums with what appear to be the same muffler. I was just wondering why the stock muffler would be replaced in many cases? Did they rattle more than usual or maybe just a supply issue at the factory? Anyway, the drum sounds great and I'm fascinated by these instruments.

That's not Standard issue it looks to be rogers.

Yes, looks like an early Rogers muffler. Here are some pictures of my 1961 Super Classic, showing the original muffler. The knob resembles the one used on Acrolite and Standard snare drums.

I've got a 48-52 badge WFL 10x15 marching snare. It came to me as a shell,badge and muffler. I've got it packed away. But here is a pic in which you can see a similar muffler. Knob looks a little different.

I don't think WFL was putting a lot of mufflers in drums at one point in the 50's so maybe this never had one and one was added later?

Interesting. The installation is very clean and whoever did it made sure it was a professional job. And on the plus side, this muffler can be set to barely touch the head without it loosening up.
