W&A kit - 1950s?

Loading...

Just acquired these beauties, and I'm hoping to learn something about them. Not much published material about these kits, so I'm hoping that some W&A aficionados on this forum can chime in regarding these drums.

I'm guessing they are early 1950s, based on the Gretsch Rocket lugs used. Other defining elements - hex tension rods. COS stick chopper hoops, except for SD, which has die cast hoops. 3 ply maple except for floor tom, which appears to be 5 ply. All have 3 ply rerings. Black interiors. Worcester badged, very cool BD muffler (see pics). All except snare drum have calf heads which may be original (AMRAWMCO Standards w/W&A insignia). No legs on the floor tom - I NEED A FLOOR TOM CRADLE!

Thanks for your input, guys.

Hi

I don't know much about W&A drums. I have some hardware and have seen photos of a few kits over the years.

Nice find! You're right - I agree - they are "beauties" ! Clapping Happy2

I have seen a few W and A kits on these forums, and the mix of components is quite varied, with shells, rims and lugs coming various drum makers,Lud,Gretsch, rogers, not sure about sling and leedy.I have seen a few that were essentially all Gretsch, and some kits had a mix of three different makers. As I remember the majority of kits had a majority of Gretsch and Rogers components.A lot of the kits will have the initials of a W/A employee inside the shells.Beautiful kit by the way,the cool thing about the W/A kits is that they can be very unique.I am sure the more knowledgeable W and A people will be along to help soon.

That is a killer drum set. Wish it were mine. I have three W&A drum sets that are each unique, and all quite gig worthy. Your Black Diamond Pearl set is older than mine which are from 1963, 1965, 1972. You all are correct about the Gretsch, Rogers, and Ludwig components mixed in with W&A's own metal and mechanical parts such as the pedals, tom holders, and internal mufflers. There was ONLY one man who assembled the drums who hand signed his RGB initials and the date inside the shells. He did this on all of the unpainted shells and silver painted shells that I have seen. I am not certain about the black painted shells that pre date all of my W&A drums. There is precious little published information available about the Walberg and Auge company. I think that they might have been the originator of today's current batch of "custom drum assemblers or Keller assemblers". W&A was well established as a major manufacturer of drum hardware for virtually all American drum brands. They traded out hardware and services to obtain shells, hoops, wrap, and other items from primarily Gretsch, Rogers, and Ludwig. The blue set has more conventional tension rods while the other drums all have the hex head rods. I also have a W&A hex head drum key. There must have also been legal agreements for W&A to use the proprietary parts from those other drum makers. Thanks for giving me another opportunity to show off my W&S babies.

1963 Mostly Gretsch Gold Glass Glitter 14x22, 9x13, 16 deep x 14 diamer

1965 Mostly Rogers Salmon Satin Flame 14x20, 8x12, 16x16

1972 Mostly Gretsch unique Glass Glitter wrap that I call Ice Blue Metallic 14x22, two 9x13, 16x16, matching wood eight lug snare similar to Gretsch

1967 Champagne Sparkle eight lug mostly Gretsch snare drum

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Beautiful! Older than mine for sure, and still in good shape. Some guys get all the luck! I love that fancy internal muffler system in the bass drum.
