Vintage Slingerlands? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Ok, well he called me back and I went out there and bought them. I could have probably walked away with them for $100 if I wanted to squeeze him on them, but I ended up giving him the $160 I had in my pocket. The good news is the hi hats DID come with the kit and I could make out faint Zildjian markings on them! I'll post pictures of that soon.

As for the drums, they sound cool, they have really weird heads on them. They are suspicious too as there looks to some mounts that were removed and filled or maybe someone modded them and returned them back to original, I don't know. I will take lots of pictures and maybe we can figure out whats going on. Also, I had no idea Remo ever made actual snare drums. That's what came with it. It actually sounds decent for having a beat ratty head on it.

Yes, those mounts are not original to the Modern Combo set-up. Nice score, BTW!

All you can see was included in the sale. My favorite part was the sweet drum sticks!

And here are two pictures of the zildjian logos. They were very tough to photograph and I think photo bucket downgrades my pictures so I don't know how they'll look here.

So that's my kit. Any info you guys can provide me would be awesome! I want to fix it up starting with changing out the heads as they have the worst sounding heads I've ever heard on them. They're super thick remo heads with about an inch foam ring underneath with plastic under that. It basically sounds like you're hitting cardboard.

Any recommendations on how to gently restore these or even just clean them up without doing anything to damage them? I'm good with other instruments, but drums are new to me as far as that goes. Thanks again for all of the input and advice everyone!

For a 160.00 you did alright.

The holes where your finger points looks to be where another cymbal mount was.

The floor tom looks to be a converted upper tom.

The size of the bass drum seems strange, with lots of plugged holes. also the spurs look strange for a Slingy.

Zildjians could be worth something.

Nice score! I know what I would do with them, fix holes/refinish.

Thank you!

So I think I might have a slight clue as to what's going on here. I just measured the drums and looked at them a little closer.

Here's my best guess knowing almost nothing about Slingerlands:

The bass drum used to be a floor tom. Three of the four leg insert mounts were removed, holes plugged, new holes drilled for the top center mount for the rack toms.

The three missing leg mounts are now on the current "floor tom" which looks as if it had the same style side mount as the other two rack toms. It also only measures 12x15 if I'm measuring correctly.

Here are the measurements I got for all of the drums. I measured at the hi edge of the rims, and then inside from the head to the bottom edge of the drum. Right?

6.5 or 7 x 10"

9 x 13"

12x15

and then the bass drum was 18" and from head to head it was about 16-17".

So maybe that helps? I don't know. My buddy is gonna help me clean them up and get them set up. All of the holes that have been plugged seemed to have been done well. I think the cymbals alone are worth what I paid for the kit. I do want to know more about the drums though just for my own knowledge. Thanks again to everybody that's commented on this thread and offered their thoughts. If anyone ever needs any vintage keyboard help, I'm your guy. lol

*edit:

I guess they could have tried to make the bass drum into a floor tom and the floor tom into a rack tom and then put it back the way it was supposed to be too. I don't know obviously.

Yep looks like a 16"x18" floor tom made into a bass. And the 3 concert toms with the 12"x15" as a floor tom now. Might have been part of a monster concert tom kit? Still a really nice deal with the A Zild hats. Nice job there it'll be a fun one to play.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

You got a nice Tama hi hat stand and that Camco pedal is really good too. Those are with $100.00. Zildjian hi hat cymbals. $150. The drums are nice even though you have a few extra holes. I'm with JC. Refinish them and they will look super. That Remo Snare looks nice. Can we get a side shot of it? I have glossy black remo Ambassadors on my concert toms and they sound good and also look good on the Silver Sparkle. Someone else might have some ideas. Actually I would like to know what Bermuda uses on his concert toms. I would use coated Ambassador on snare batter and hazy ambassador snare side.

I actually really like the bass drum pedal! The hats sound great and are in really nice condition. I think they're 70's based on a zildjian logo date thing I saw on a different site, but I'm no expert. As for the bass drum, if somebody did convert a floor tom to a bass drum, they did an excellent job because it looks like it's done really well and everything seems very precise if that makes sense. For the depth of the bass drum measurement, would it basically be inside head to head? or the shell length with the hoops off? For heads I figured I would most likely go with the ol standard coated ambassadors for everything, or the Remo "Vintage" heads, though those don't seem to hold their life as long, but I love how they sound on old 3 ply maple ludwigs. I am open to suggestions though. Here are some side pics of the snare Vibes. Thanks again guys!
