Hi,

I am a newbie. Let me introduce myself. My name is Pete Huerter. I am returning to drumming after more than 10 years away. I'm in the process of setting up a Slingerland vintage jazz kit. I have a vintage Slingerland bass drum (Black and Brass Chicago Oval Badge. 1956-1959) that I bought 15 years ago (in Chicago) when I somehow lost my bass drum at a gig (I was young). I have really enjoyed learning it's history. I'd like to find some toms to match (blue sparkle) and try to set up a really great sounding (read resonant) jazz kit.

Towards that end I recently placed a bid for what I thought was a suitable matching tom on e-bay. The description is the title of this post. I was so excited I bid compulsively. When I re-read the size of the drum I did a big DOH!

I have never heard of a 15x10 Tom. I emailed the seller but he insists the measurements are correct.

Does anyone have any info about this size of drum? What was it used for? What can it be used for? Is this a concert tom? Could it conceivably be used in a jazz kit?

The single row of lugs looks interesting to me. I have seen a vintage slingerland kit from the same era with a tom that looks just like this one. Any info on this? It seems like the 8 lugs might allow for a bright resonant tone.

Looks more like a marching tenor drum - notice the eye to affix a shoulder strap to.

Yeah that drum is tenor,but it has to be 10x14 or 12x15.Seller is wrong.Tell him to remeasure.It would make a great tom for a jazz kit,and you could use a Rims type mount so you don't have to alter the drum.Just be aware that Slingerland blue sparkle came in a few different shades.There are some drums that have a beautiful dark blue wrap and if you were to remove it,on the reverse side its red sparkle.One of Slingerlands best wraps I think.

Thanks for the warm welcome, and great info. I'm excited again. I hope I can make it work with RIMS mounts!

The seller posted 15 x 10 (not 10 x 15). To me this means that this drum is 15" in diameter. Your responses seem to say that this is actually the depth?

Can you help me understand these dimensions?

It is 15 in diameter....

Depth first and diameter second is actually the correct way to express the size of a drum.

Now THAT is a matter of opinion! I've seen drum sizes "expressed" both ways for years.

Anyway, Slingerland's 10x15 (or 15x10) marching drums are not uncommon. They were produced throughout the 3-ply w/rings era and well into the 6-ply maple era as well. Fairly popular size, particularly with DBCs.

I've got some of both if anyone is interested. Mine are drilled for 8 lugs of the "high tension" variety. They do make for an "interesting" size of rack tom as someone posted earlier...

Bill, That's true both are correct, but yet they are still both the same shell size when the dust settles!, But to technically be correct Slingerland lists them as 10x15" in the catalog, I have a pic on the first post with the catalog page displayed. but your incorrect about the shell plies, Slingerland didn't produce a 6 ply shell it was a 5 ply shell.

Hey, I stand corrected on the plys. 5 is correct. I just inspected a 12x16 Slingerland TDR parade drum, and the first ply inside the innermost maple ply is a very thick ply that I had counted as two plys. My mistake, and I will admit that until within the last year I had never owned a Slingerland before.

I was impressed by your catalog page. The late 70s & early 80s were my "stupid" years, because sometime during that span of time I gave all of my catalog collection away -- had several years worth from all of the major companies. I appreciate this forum and it's "parent" website because of the wealth of information available.

And BTW, I'll also stand corrected on the "technicality" of how a shell size is listed in the catalogs -- can't argue with that!!
