I've heard from others and seen comments on VDF that suggest re-wrapping originally stained drums is (in general) less desirable than keeping them stained. This make sense to me as a collector.
But what about re-staining originally stained drums??
Is their a percieved loss in value if the drums are re-stained versus left in the original (albeit un-cared for, or otherwise nasty) finish?

Jeff, good question,I've purposely tracked this type stuff on ebay, and it seems that the painted and stained shells suffer less devaluation than a re-wrapped shell does! as long as the stained shells have received a professional re stain or re-painted.
I would think its like a vintage car, a good paint job does not deter the value.
From what I can tell if the drums are going to be used - played - then putting a very nice original-type stain finish on stained drums would not devalue them - in the eyes of another player. But, if a museum for example, wanted the drums for historic reasons you don't want to do anything to them. That's how I've been reading it.
