Vintage Drum Mic Technique Last viewed: 6 days ago
Hmmm interesting. The picture could of been taken pre the final mic set up, or it could be mid session.

I have a feeling that mic rig was in a 'pulled back' position when the photo was taken. That rig would make more sense positioned directly above the drummer facing down towards the drums. Overheads are a great way to get the entire kit, cymbals and all. The more I look at it, the less weird it appears to be.

Who is it? Looks like Fred Astaire...
I'm more interested in the iPad on the stand.:D
I think back then they didn't use a real overhead position that much, because the mic(s) were also to pick up the bass drum.
This looks like some kind of "tree" set-up , maybe it was used for picking up complete orchestras on other sessions.
Might be part of a Movie or TV presentation which would require that the mics be overhead and out of the frame. Those 3 mics appear to be RCA KU-3A's ( a variant of the RCA 77 ribbon mic) which was a more directional model that was specifically designed for film studio usage.
That is Fred Astaire so I'm guessing this was related to a movie production. Even if this is not an actual film set, but rather recording a track to later mime to, it would be likely that a studio would use the same techniques to make those recordings as they used on film sets.
Those mics would be worth a pretty penny today.
Definitely not the Glyn Johns' Technique.. lol
