Vintage 50s Slingerland set Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

Hi there, i'm about to buy my first vintage set.

A drummer friend of mine (he plays only old gretsch roundbadges) suggested me to buy a slingerland as my first kit, because their price is lower than the gretsch but the overall sound and build quality is good.

I've searched the web a lot and i stumbled across this kit, which to me seem like a good deal :

but honestly i don't know if it worths the money.

What's your thoughts about ? I'm mainly looking for a 22 bass drum set, and this seem to fit my musical need nicely ...

Thanks !

From the pictures that are provided it looks to be original and a nice kit.

I can help you with this one, I know this kit it belongs to Mark Jeffs of Rusty drums, I have bought some great drums from Mark, I have seen this in the flesh it is in original condition and in my opinion is cheap for what it is, these mid 50s Slingerland kits are lovely and really useable, Mark is a lovely fellow and is well worth a visit, he makes good coffee too

Take a look at these 50's Slingerlands a forum member is selling. Unless your really stuck on the aqua wrap these are really nice with a RK snare and some hardware too. They have the nice price too. flowers2

Oh thank to you all for the quick replies.

The red set is quite interesting, with the snare and all, at a very interesting price, but i have to add shipping and border taxes (i live in EU), but i'll seriously think about it. :p

Currently i'm waiting a shipping quote from the rusty drum guy, which is based in UK if i'm not wrong.

the blue wrap kit that you showed is not a Masonite shell it's a mahogany interior shell.

I hate to be a big rain cloud but if the currency calculator is correct that works out to about $1600+ us. That's certainly enough for those 3 pieces!! 2 years ago I bought a late 50's Slingerland WMP kit here from another forum member for $1200 shipped after he couldn't get any takers on it. The kit was 22/13/16 with a matching snare, original calf heads and some hardware. I seldom see a 50's Slingerland kit sell for over $1200 on EBAY. Now, with that being said, they are FANTASTIC sounding drums. I have been unable to upgrade my kit based on chasing a better sound. I put coated amb on the toms and PS3's on the kick and they sound great although they have a pretty narrow sweet spot. The GK snare drove me crazy for a year trying to get it to sound right and not buzz or hum but after putting one of the new Remo Skyntone head on it and cranking it way up, it too sounds super sexy. Clamshell strainers are the biggest pieces of junk ever put on a drum, they are pretty but not worth the hassle.

That link the the red sparkle set for sale here is a perfect example of what I was talking about. They are very nice indeed and priced around $1600. Look at the date he posted them for sale, almost a year ago. You will see when a desireable set is posted for sale here, if it's a smokin deal it'll be gone in an hour if not sooner. It's a buyers market now and has been for several years. Most of the REALLY nice stuff that is traded you and I will probably never see, there are definate circles of collectors that give each other first crack at the nice stuff. It's like that in most collectors circles so I don't feel bad.....I just keep lookin.............and waiting.

fatty, thanks for the notice.

actually the red 1600$ kit for sale here seems better priced, but you have to keep in mind adding shipping costs to EU plus border taxes which roughly is 1600 + shipping + (0.27 * (1600 + shipping)) which means at best something around 2200$.
