Value of Slingerland drum set Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Hello All,

I am new to this forum, but have read many of the posts and I am very impressed with the knowledge of the members and willingness of you all to share that knowledge.

I am inquiring regarding the value of my 1977 Slingerland chrome over wood drum set. I am the original owner. The kit is in really great condition, having never been gigged. In fact, it spent about twenty-five years in the original shipping boxes sitting in a closet. I still have the original Slingerland batter and resonance heads.

The shells are three ply with a maple inner ply and reinforcement rings. The sizes are as follows:

Bass drum 14x24

Tom 10x14

Tom 10x15

Floor Tom 16x16

Floor Tom 16x18

Snare Drum 6.5x14 Chrome over brass Buddy Rich TDR model

The kit currently has new Remo heads and I will change the heads back to the original heads and photograph the kit and post them whenever I get a little time.

The only non original Slingerland portion of the kit is heavy duty Pearl hardware, including the double Tom holder. The Pearl Tom holder was mounted in my presence at the drum shop where I purchased the kit. I found the Pearl hardware to be far superior to the heavy duty Slingerland hardware at the time. I know this may negatively impact the value of the kit for some collectors.

I am considering selling the kit and wanted to get an idea of a range of the resale value. I appreciate the benefit of your knowledge.

Pictures will really set this thread off. I think that's why most of us are actually here is to look at others drums.

While the pearl mounts may hurt the value, the fact that a drum shop did the work and not some teenager with a drill, makes a big difference. A lot of Gretsch owners opted for other hardware, and even some ludwig guys ( namely Ringo ) opted for a Rogers swiv-o-matic Tom mount. The difference is execution, poorly drilled mounts, hogged out holes for pearls 7/8" mounts and extra holes will always hurt value.

It's worth noting that later on Slingerland would use pearl style mounts on their import sets in the 90's.

One last thing, it's refreshing to see someone who is up front about selling their set on here, many times we see new members who have inherited a set and are just trying to get maximum dollar for a set they could care less about, watch out you might just get the vintage drum bug on here and end up keeping your set, or buying another!

Hi Club,

Thanks for the reply. You are correct about the photos being needed. I may just take some with the existing heads and post instead of changing them back to the original heads.

I ordered a new DW Collector Series kit and just don't have room to set up both. I thought it might be better for someone who appreciates these drums to own them instead of just sitting in a closet. It is kind of like having a vintage car and only being able to keep it in the garage.

If I decide to sell the drums I want them to go to someone who will appreciate them and take good care of them.

Hello All;

I apologize for just now posting photos as I have been sick with an upper respiratory infection that turned into bronchitis. I did a quick cleaning of the drum shells, but have not had an opportunity to conduct a thorough cleaning. Also, I haven't had changed the heads back to the original Slingerland drum heads that came with the kit. I would appreciate your comments and any estimates of the value of the kit. Thanks in advance.

Those are really nice, perfect for gigging. The hardware is going to bring down the value a little, though. Also the market is pretty tough. I've seen similar sets going for $700-1000. Good luck!

I'd keep this kit and send back the DWs. IMHO, those Slingerlands are much better drums. But perhaps I'm biased...

Good luck.

Yes you are biased. Mind Blowi

Those drums look fantastic! I mean, they look really fantastic. I know it's just an opinion, but I think the Pearl hardware is not only more functional than a Set-O-Matic but it looks better as well. No offense intended to Slingy fans as I am one as well, but that just looks sweet to me.
