Unnamed snare shell

Loading...

Hi guys, I have a snare shell which for months on end I cannot fathom who made it. My conclusion so far is that it's been hand made by somebody trying to replicate a Slingerland Shelbyville.

It's a maple shell (3 ply) with an oak (I think it's oak anyway) reinforcement ring. It also has a 3 hole strainer which I believe was used for more chunky strainers but so far I haven't found one which looks like it would fit -I have been going by pictures for that front though, so it's hard to tell if certain strainers would actually fit.

My guess to it being hand made is the quality of construction, it's all rather scruffy. The other thing is that the snare beds seem to be on a bit of a wonk. I haven't actually put the snare together yet but I imagine that could be a problem, I imagine I would have to have one snare cord looser then the other because one side is higher.

The shell is 5 by 14 inches and the hole measurement for the lugs is 1.25. I think the angle of the bearing edge is 30 degrees and the apex is generally flat but also rounded in some places, the outside return is rounded and I think the inside return is straight. I'm not known for being a great describer of things like that so if you need a photo of the bearing edge that I will happily take one for you.

If anybody wants any other photo's also just ask and i'll take some.

Welcome to the forum, there is a great section on Slingerland shells on the sister site here, you may be able to glean some info there.

The construction does make your shell slingerland like to me,but I am no expert, one guess I could make would be it could be a slingy shell,in the late 90's early 2000's there was a seller selling leftover slingy shells that were made before Sling shut down and were resurrected. As I remember the shells were from a lot of different eras and different stages of finishing. The shells would be marked with a p on the inside to indicate a pearl or covered finish, from the outside your shell looks like that was what it was intended to be finished with.

I am sure people more in the know will chime in soon.

Thank you for commenting eamesuser.

hhhmmm there's no P on the inside to say that, also there's no grommet hole for a badge, this seller wouldn't have given them badges when he sold them would he?

The outside does look like it was intended to have a wrap on it though

AS far as I remember the seller in question was offering shells that were pretty raw,no holes drilled for hardware, and a few had bearing edges, most looked like they had a slight round over, but not a factory edge.

Yours looks like it was drilled after purchase, but who knows, this seller started with ton of shells as I remember,he may have had some botched factory shells.

I could only guess that the p would be added before a shell was put on the shelf

as stock ready to be finished.

That sounds like what your saying is probably right. Where did you find all this stuff out?

I remember my drum teacher Clive managed to get a hold of left over Promuco shells, he had 400 snare shells and 200 kits. Sounds like the same thing with this guy taking Slingerland shells.
