Trying to guesstimate old Rogers' shells Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Hi all. I am trying to date some old Rogers' shells, but I don't have much to go on. They had a 'custom' paint job about a decade ago, and the badges were never put back on. They have beavertail lugs, the insides are the speckled grey, whatever paper labels were there are gone. The sizes are 22, 13, 16. There is a cymbal mount on the bd, but doesn't seem to be a tom mount. I only have a couple photos, and they're not that good. My intent is to re-wrap and re-furbish these, if they look to be worth the effort. Any thoughts?

At the earliest Dayton era drums, around 1967,those were the first with speckled interiors and the bow tie claws. At that time the most popular config was 20 12 16. The 13 toms became more common when the standard 5 pc became popular, and were seen with the 20 kicks, the 22 became more the norm in the fullerton era 1969 and after. The speckled int shells went up to 1983,during both the swivo and memriloc hardware eras.Probably the best way to narrow it down would be to look at the inside of the shells and see what hardware they were drilled for. Also look at the ply count of the shells,1963 to 1971 the were 5 ply,72 to 74 could have been either 3 ply or 5,then back to 5 ply 75 to 83.

If you like the the way they sound, worthy of a rewrap for sure, but you will never get your money back or resale except if you got the drums for free.

This page may help you figure out what you have.

Thank you very much for your thorough and well-thought out reply! I am able to get these shells fairly cheap. If I sell the brass and double-pedal that come with it, maybe for next to nothing. You don't think the resale value would be worth the cost of the wrap and time? I am primarily considering it for myself, but I always like to keep my possibilities open :-)

FYI - Cymbal mount, bd spurs and floor tom leg mounts are all non Rogers. Check interiors for hole plugging and mount changes.

As far as what you would get resale wise I am not sure in your neck of the woods, but I know that prices over the border are usually higher than in the lower 48.

In my area that kit would sell for no more than 350.00. The wrap material would cost at least 200.00-250.00,so if I had 100.00 150.00 in it to start I might break even.

I have a Rogers 1967 kit and it was my main gigging kit for 10 years, and I still gig it occasionally so the quality is there.

What you have there is what I would consider a great player kit,it has been modded, but with what looks like good hardware, and if that is a laquer/painted finish the holes have been patched so someone put money and effort to make that a good player kit.Restoring it with a vintage wrap and period correct hardware would be expensive, but I think if you want to put a vintage or really cool modern wrap that you like on it that the kit is deserving, but the value is in keeping it IMO.

Doesn't the bass drum appear to be 16 or 18" deep? It does to me. I don't know what it would be then.

Pretty good guesses. I can get this kit for $300 CAD, which is about $210 USD. There is a pedal and a snare with it, that I don't need and can sell for likely more than what I pay for the kit, so I expect the shells will be essentially free.

My current main gigging kit is actually an early Gretsch Catalina Club. I do love it, but I'm looking for something with a little more warm punch. I'll have to give this a little more thought.

I appreciate all the input!
