Trying to figure out the selling value of my vintage ludwig Last viewed: 1 day ago

Hey everyone, this is my first post here in the forums. I have a vintage Ludwig kit that I picked up about 6 years ago out of some guys barn (no joke, covered in hay and dirt – paid $100) that I took home, cleaned up with some steel wool to get the rust off the chrome, reglued a cracked bass drum hoop, and sanded/repainted the black on both bass drum hoops. The tom mount was loose on the rack so I took it off and have it stored (why it is not in the picture). The top hoops and tension rods on the toms are what I got with the kit, but I purchased some old hoops from a local drum shop to put resonant heads on the toms. The toms also have the “baseball bat” muffle still installed. Best I can figure is these are 60’s model drums, but as you can see the kick and rack have different lugs than the floor. The rack is 13”, floor is 14”, and the kick is 22”. From what I can tell this is the original wrap (you can see the fade difference from where the mount came off the tom). I have been tossing the idea of selling this kit around in my mind, but wanted to ask for some input on the value if the kick and toms before I make up my mind if I want to move on or stay with my baby. I do actively play this kit, primarily in the studio.

Also the snare is a 120 anniversary reissue gretsch. (edit: not planning to sell the snare, just thinking about selling the toms and kick)

Thanks vintagemore :)

Honestly I am very conflicted about selling. I love the drums, but I have some issues tuning the toms since they are so close in size. I also am recording for clients who want that "bigger drum sound". The main reason though is I am about to start gigging with a band that does need me to be playing on a larger floor than I have, and I don't like taking these out of controlled environments into clubs.

Unfortunately I do not have the money sitting around to buy another kit so I am facing the choice of play what I have and make it work, or buy something more versatile but give up the kit I have now. Not a fun choice lol.

Stu - Ship me that kit + $350.00 and I'll ship you these: (see photos)

Serious offer. I have them up for sale for $1100. Go to Sale section and read the ad I wrote for the drums. I'm offering you a fair market price (in trade) for yours.

Your kit 'could bring' a good price depending of course on finding the right buyer. I'm offering you a killer vintage kit with 3-ply Mahogany shells and sizes that will hold their own in any setting.

Let me know if you're interested. You can get references on me from several of the members here. Vintagemore2000, Ludwigvonbuzzhoven, Kevins any of those guys will vouch for me. You can deal/trade with me with complete confidence.

Offer is on the table. PM me if you're interested.

John

that floor tom being a classic 14x14 and champagne sparkle, is worth more than the rest of the drum set. Classic 14" x 14" keystone floor toms are rare but champagne sparkle is also a rare and desirable finish so the combination makes it very desireable. I would hold onto the kit and watch similar auctions on ebay to see comparable prices before you set a price.

EDIT: the snare is probably pretty desirable to a gretsch person I would probably sell it separately.

Just grabbed the serial numbers off the kit and it looks like the rack and kick are from 65 and the floor is from 66. The numbers are:

RT 139208

BD 187936

FT 284642
