With apologies to the Dr. Seuss nature of my topic..............

I am looking for some good pointers on modifiying 60's Ludwig Flat base snare stands. I am going to take off the top tightener piece of the tripod section (with the wing screw and metal insert that the basket tube section slides into) and cut the vertical shaft to make the tripod base shorter, then re-install the top tightener piece on the now shorter shaft.

Question 1: I know that the tightener pieces are not welded on, just press fitted together (with grooves on each of the two parts). Is there any trick to getting these off easily?

When I cut down the tube, I know the cut needs to be made perfectly straight or the tightener piece will not fit on correctly. Also, I know to fold up the tripod legs and leave a little room above them, so I don't cut the tube too short.

Question 2: Assuming I have done everything correctly, what is the best way to re-install the tightener piece? I was thinking about using JB Weld, but I don't want any to get into the piece itself where the metal insert and wing screw are. That would be trouble! Does anyone have any good tips for that? I assume I can't just tap it on with a hammer, because it will most likely not stay tight, at least not for long.

Let me look at a couple stands I have at home for an idea.

Also if you need a couple extra bases to monkey with, I have 3 available.

I did exactly what you describe with a flat base to use for a 10X14 snare converted to a tom. All the precautions you state are correct, especially the one about folding the legs up to determine where to make the cut. I simply tapped the clamp collar back onto the cut off shaft. It's not as tight as the original, but tight enough that it does not move. After all, when in use the pressure is downward anyway...it's not going to lift off.

You're gonna have to cut the top tube too, right, to get it to lower down as far as possible?

Not necessarily. I don't use the WFL snare tops. I hate those. I can never get them completley level and the drum never seems to stay tight. Plus, there is not as much clearance for the snares to hang when they are thrown off.

I use the lightweight Gibraltar baskets that come with either the 4606 Series or the Flat Base 8606 Series. Same tube diameter, and much easier to work with (I bought a lot of several (basket sections only) on the bay awhile back).

I am mainly cutting them down because I can't get it to go low enough on my kit to hold a 5.5" deep snare. The basket section is all the way down as far as it will go, and the drum is still a little too high. I play my snares perfectly level. I am 6' 3" and actually sit fairly high, so it's not like I'm lowriding back there!

Yep,I get what you're trying to do, but if the top tube is longer

than the bottom, you'll accomplish nothing but having a shorter

bottom section.

If those Gibralter top sections are shorter

than the WFLs, it should work, yepper.....:)

I used a block of wood under the edge and stuck that with the hammer. Just kind of worked my way around until it came off with no damage.
