Tom Mount Last viewed: 44 minutes ago

Yah Tim, I never understood Dave Clark's tom configuration. I remember seeing him on either Ed Sullivan or Hullabaloo and wondering why he mounted his larger tom on the left (Trixon-style). Plus his tom sizes looked more like modern "power" toms than anything available in the Rogers catalog.[Attachment: 66156]

Mike!

That all said... Kenny Aronoff has set up his tom's like that for years... and still does when he plays that configuration. I saw him with John "Cougar" Mellencamp back in 1986 playing the "Scarecrow Tour", and thought how odd! Certainly works for him though. Dave Clark preceeded KA by a couple decades of course. Maybe that's where KA got the idea!

I like the the tom mount, but using the snare stand makes it look more compact. Can you lower and shift the angle of the tom a little when it's on the mount and have it still be comfortable? In my opinion, that would really make it look great.Just don't tell Dave Clark. :D His toms were in the clouds.-Tim

The problem with the double tom holder is that you can't lower it anymore than what you see. I know from up front the angle of the tom looks a bit too angled, but behind the kit it's right where I like it. Here's a pic from the drivers seat.

Either way sounds good, although, I do notice a bit more tone when it's mounted on the tom arm. I know you're not suppose to add extra holes to vintage kits, but I'm thinking of getting a Rogers tom and cymbal mount and putting them on the kick, then I'd plug up the holes where the double tom mount is. I know it will make the kit unoriginal, but with them being the koa finish, which nobody seems to want anyway, I don't think it would de-value the kit too much.

This is what I'm talking about, like the one DanC is selling. Any thoughts?

Add the single tom mount and just replace the double tom mount with the cymbal mount. If you don't use it to mount a cymbal, you could just use it mount an accessory (cowbell or block). This way you are only adding 5 new holes instead of 9 and then plugging holes for the double mount.

Hey it was originally installed at the dealer, right? Just kidding. ;)

You asked which way looks cooler. As a Rogers guy, I have to say that a tom hanging on the original swivo mount always looks cooler and more authentic. I'm also a big proponent of minimizing the hardware I have to carry, but again, you're not asking about convenience or practicality, you're asking about appearance. For display purposes, I think a kit should resemble the catalog shot... swivo mount all the way!Mike

I'm with you..!

I've done both / but it is easier to keep the tom mount attached to the tom when transporting in a drumbag...

Looks cooler with the tom arm / ...
