To Clean or Not?

Loading...

I am nearly finished restoring an old (probably 40's) Gretsch marching snare. It is a beauty! I am a very fastidious person and today, I thought I may as well clean up the heads while waiting for some carnauba wax to dry. The batter is stamped "Weather King, Ambassador, General Purpose, Batter" (the word Remo is missing). The reso head is unmarked but, appears to be of the same era. Both heads are stained but, in a good way, at least in my opinion. There are light brown and yellow splotches on each head (primarily the batter) but, all are very subtle. I don't know if drum heads can develop "patina" but, when I went to clean them, I had to stop. I felt that if started cleaning, I would be committing some kind of sacrilege!

Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you in advance.

From your description, now I want them, just as you described them. Definitely go with your instinct on this, I'd say!

And in fact I have regretted "fixing up" a BD reso head or two...

Thanks, Mitch! I am going to go with your advice 100%! The more I think about it, the more I think it makes sense.
