NOT meaning to be a stick-in-the-mud...

But I don't remember Ludwig having Stainless Steel shells available on kits until the late 1970s... was this maybe a special order?

Yes! PLEASE post pics SOON!!

Gary, the previous owner he's wrong on the date. Stainless kits were not available at that timeframe.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

The Ludwig Book has dates of 1978-80. The website dedicated to Stainless Steel states, '76-80. Check this site out for some interesting information about the SS Octaplus set. This site also claims that (2) 22" basses were standard for the Octaplus SS http://www.ludwigstainlesssteeldrums.com/index.html

Gary,

Just did a quick bit of research on the sister site (VDG).

Stainless Steel was first available on sets in a supplemental flyer with a copyright of 1975 (see this: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/finishes/ludwig/ludwig_76_spotlight_supplement_large.jpg). That is earlier than I remembered -- but I would think it possible that either the owner is a little confused on his dates (like I get from time-to-time), OR this could have been an "early release" or special order or something like that.

OR... is it possible they are COW? That was first available in the 1973 catalog. I picked up a couple of Ludwig orphans (singles?) last summer that the owner described as "stainless steel" in his CL posting. When I got there to pick them up, they were COW. Picked them up anyway, BTW... as I got a very good price!

In any event, if I found either SS or COW complete octaplus set out of the mid-70s at a descent price I'd be pumped, too!
