Thoughts on Rogers Holiday Cleveland Mardi Gras drums... Last viewed: 3 days ago

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the board and was hoping for some insight from knowledgeable members concerning a kit I have in my possession. It's a Rogers Holiday kit in what I believe is "Mardi Gras" finish. My research leads me to believe they are late 50's-early 60's era. The inside of each drum is a flat gray color. Each drum has reinforcement rings and paper tags with serial numbers and the Cleveland identification. Sizes are as follows:

5x14 snare SN#24041

8x12 rack tom SN#24209

14x20 bass SN#22387

With this kit there is no floor tom. The snare is missing a lug, and there is some very minor surface rust on some of the chrome on the lugs and the stand for the rack tom. This rust appears very easily treated and removed however, and I was able to scratch some off using just my fingernail. As easy as it would be I didn't want to treat any of the rust because I'm looking to sell this kit and feel the buyer has the right to treat it as they see fit once they receive it. Kind of like when you have a rare coin you aren't supposed to shine it up prior to selling it to a collector. I am working on attaching some photos soon (it's not letting me do so at the moment for some reason but I'm still trying!) and would greatly appreciate some honest, knowledgeable feedback prior to putting them up for sale. If anyone here is interested in them I would most certainly be willing to work a deal as these drums deserve to go to a good home and someone who appreciates what they are. Thank you!

Yes, Welcome to the VDF! From the tag numbers you listed, you have a 1961-62 Cleveland set, and the Mardi Gras finish is quite rare and collectable. There are a lot of great Rogers experts here in the forum, and they will surly chime in with opinions as soon as you post some pictures.

The type of Rogers lugs on your set are commonly called "Bread and Butter" lugs, and these lugs were very prone to cracking, so when you're taking pics of the drums, try to examine the lugs for any stress cracks. Cracked B&B lugs are common but will affect the value of your kit.

And you are correct about refraining from cleaning any hardware or chrome on that set until you get some good restoration advice from the experts here. Uninformed attempts at cleaning (such as using abrasives or steel wool) could actually damage the hardware and devalue your drums.

Looking forward to seeing the pics!

OK all, here are some photos of the kit. I should add that the bearing edges are pretty much flawless on each drum. Thanks, and please let me know if anyone needs specific photos of something in particular to help with determining what I should let these go for.

Also I'll note that thus far I've found no stress fractures on any of the lugs as I went over them this morning. I will be sure to double check when I get home tonight. Thanks!

Does anyone have a ball park idea what these may be worth? They are being put up for sale this weekend.
