The Satisfaction Of Revival Last viewed: 11 hours ago

I got these last May from a CL add. The people just wanted them out of their garage. Who knows how long they'd been sitting there. Just want to share my joy with all of you knowing you'd appreciate seeing an old drum set back in action and know the feeling, too.

It's a '71 (or so) Slingerland Avante. It was a treat to have these up and running in the studio. I have the 3rd mounted 14" tom but it needs a couple rims so it's not quite ready for action yet. I also had to borrow some BD T's from my other Sling set but she's back in the studio and doing some gigs, of course, only in the places that I know have stable stages which means I'll be taking her out this weekend, too. If anyone has the parts I need please let me know.

They're backwards!! (Kidding)

Nice score. Those "satin flame" wraps, or whatever Slingerland called theirs, are so spacey.

Very cool.

They're not backwards! Most everyone else's are! Mind Blowi.... Also Kidding. It's not a color I would've chosen if I had more selections but where am I gonna find a selection at the price point I paid. New heads top and bottom cost more than the drums. Plus my GB band does alot of 70's music and this color SCREAMS DISCO. With stage lights on them they are extremely pink but I don't care because they're vintage and different. And most importantly, they sound great!! I still have to clean up the bass drum and will do that once I find the correct claws and rods.

A great looking "Disco" kit! Lavender Satin Flame is somewhat rare, so you did good by getting these and bringing them back to life. Did you also get the single Swivomatic arm for the 14" tom? The Avante setup was a novel idea and looks cool. Once complete, your kit will really give your 70's band that retro vibe! Kudos on bringing this kit back to life... and for letting us remember that we all don't play "right-hand" kits! LoLoLoLo

Thank you all for the comments. It makes me feel better about playing pink drums. And I know there are other lefties on this site. It makes me do a double take when I see your sets, too, until I realize; hey! I can play that set!! Yes, this came with just about everything including the original hardware package from the catalog...2 Buddy Rich cym stands, Dynamo HH stand, Tempo King BD pedal (needs beater and leather strap), Rocket SD stand, single and double Set-O-Matic tom mounts. The only thing it didn't have was the original GK COB snare. Instead, it came with a '66 Supraphonic but I did find a good Sling COB with s/n within 30k of the rest of the drums and used the Supra to fund the GK COB snare. These have the tan interiors and there is some very minor re-ring separation so I wonder how long it will be before that gets worse. I don't know if I should fix them pronto or if I have some time. Any input on that guys and gals?

That's great that you also received the complete hardware package! By letting us know that the shells have the tan interior, you have the desirable 3-ply shells with solid maple re-rings, correct? As to the ring separation, I've seen many that came from the factory with slight separation to begin with. If that's what you have, then they may not separate any more. Just keep an eye on them and decide for yourself if some glue and clamping are in the near future. Enjoy your Avante!

Thanks for the ring sep info. That's good to know. Yes the shells are the 3ply. Badges are black n silver with raised lettering and s/n's in 50*** except for the fl tom which is 49*** which, through my research, puts them at 1971 as the shells all have a P but no date and the snare I picked up is 20*** with the same style badge. The hardware package was definitely a bonus and for the most part is in great shape but I think it'll only be used for photo opps. There's a reason why hardware has improved over the years. It is amazing that the hardware lasted with the set all these years. The guy I bought them from purchased the set used from a local music store and who knows where they were before that. What's great is that there was no color shade difference under the lugs. That tells me that they didn't get much light of day although the satin wraps may possibly age differently. Instead of fading they get irreversible scratches.
