Supraphonic Quest

Loading...

Now that I have my new Ludwig Acrolite snare drum purchase made I have my hopes set on The Holy Grail of Ludwig metal snares, a 1960 to 1963 COB Supraphonic. I'm not looking for a museum piece just something with cosmetic blemishes, all original and structurally sound. Is there any of you Ludwig players that have both of these drums, can you tell me the differences in sound between these two drums?

Welcome,

I don't own an acro, but I have a 67 supra 5X14 that sounds great. My Ludwig pre serial COB super 400, is the best sounding snare drum I own.

PS

Ludwig changed the name from super, to supra after the pre serial badge.

I've played on a COB 400. Meh. I've heard much better brass snares that cost a lot less...

I do own all three: Acro, Supra (60s&70s) and COB Super 400.

To me the Acro is a great workhorse, no worries taking it anywhere. a great Snare with a lot of "crack".

The Supras are amazing. Loud Snares with a great tone, that can be very sensitive too.

The COB Super 400 is (in my ears) the most "round" sounding, the most musical. great tuning range, and amazing sounding in every, yes every musical situation. I use it in the Studio and live for Rock, Pop, Jazz, Latin .........

I currently own two supras (one COB). I have always played a non-COB supra, because it was the first drum I ever owned and I simply stuck with it. It's early 60s, bought in the 70s when I was a teenager. I was lucky enough to recently purchase a second supra, which is a pre-serial number COB drum. Last month, I set each drum up with the same heads and tuned them equally. I love the COB so much that the non-COB supra is now for sale. Yeah, that's right - I'm selling the first drum I ever owned because the COB supra is that good.

You won't regret it.

ps- I've never owned an Acro.

Auto:

please think a little more about selling the first drum you ever owned....There will come a day when I think you will wish you still had it.

I've kept my Zim Gar Blue Sparkle snare drum all these years just because it was my first drum.

Just passing on my .02.....:)
