Who knows Steve Maxwell's story? Did he play drums professionally? Where did he get the dough to start two vintage drum shops, and one in Manhattan no less. Nobody is getting rich selling drums, vintage or not, so what gives?

If you want to know his background you should call him and ask him personally.
Buy low, sell high. And I don't judge him for it, that is how business is done. Good for him.
I know Steve on a business basis only, having done several deals with him. Not looking to start a negative thread about him, just curious.

I'd like to have his job, I know that. I've talked to him on the phone a few times. Seems like a very nice guy. He plays very well, so it's quite possible that he got started with money he earned professionally.
Great man, honest, loyal, trustworthy, decent, straight shooter, etc...I could go on and on. He is what a lot of people are not in this industry, thus the reason for his success. If only the bottom feeding slugs out there could take a page from his book!!Im sure we all know a handful of them.
I agree with all of the replies, so far. Having purchased and communicated with him numerous times, I would also add he is quick to reply to questions and very fair with his pricing. Yes, he is a business man and he needs to support himself/family, but he is also an enthusiast and musician. He is probably one of the biggest supporters of vintage drums. I visit his website at least once a week, if not more, to check his inventory and see what's new. I'll listen to his drum samples and sometimes get disappointed that a particular kit doesn't have a sound recording. ;) His You Tube channel/videos are also great to watch, especially when he is playing.
If I'm ever in NYC or Chicago, I'm going to make it a point to visit one of his stores. Funny thing is, I'm not a musician or formally a drummer (that's my son). I just love vintage drums. How they are engineered, the way they look and how they sound.

I purchased one of Steve's rail consolette's. The upper chromed section had a very small manufacturing scratch in it, which faced the audience side. I sent Steve a picture of this and he immediately sent me another part and told me to keep the defective one, which eventually ended up on my new Ludwig Classic Maple Downbeat kit. I view Steve as a person of integrity!
