I'm not aware of any steel-shell snare drums offered by Ludwig in the late 60's...or 70's for that matter! I believe they only produced shells using metals similar to aluminum for both the Supraphonic and Acrolite drums.

Some of the snares for the 1970's stainless steel sets were steel shells. I was told by a Ludwig employee back in the 90's.

I'd like to see one of these.
I'd like to see one too. I was told they made a batch of 5x14 steel Supraphonics for the initial batch of steel sets. I'm guessing they're pretty heavy?

The Ludwig Book does make mention of a steel-shell Supraphonic. I've yet to actually hear of one or even see pictures. Other than that, I'm not aware of any other steel-shelled Ludwig drums from the 60's and 70's.

I've seen (and played) some Stainless Steel Ludwig marching snares.... haven't seen a supra in Stainless though....
Were the Ludwig Standard snares steel?
No, they were either Acrolite finish or Chrome finish. The actual shell was still basically aluminum.

If a magnet sticks to it, it`s steel.
