Speed King Last viewed: 6 hours ago

section 2,just a couple of questions - what beater were you using on the dw 5000?and what beater is on the speedking?

On the DW, I was using the classic two-sided DW beater (with the brown plastic head, pre-black plastic). I use the felt side.

My Speed King didn't come with a beater, so I'm using my DW beater with the Speed King.

I refurbished mine a few months ago. It was practically frozen. It still has some squeaking going on, and I plan on putting some nylon bushings in at some point.

Here's a Youtube link to a company that is refurbishing and modifying Speed King pedals.

Someone may have some interest in purchasing or able to pick up some tips from the video.

Their website is not up and running, but a friend called them and they sent pricing info to him. HE is thinking of ordering one.

very interesting to hear section 2.

Im sure you realise where this is going - quite often guys will feel older pedals as being far lighter and quicker than the newer ones. sometimes this can be attributed to the beater as the standard dw beater is quite a heavy piece of work, and compared with an older felt beater it would make the pedal "feel" a lot heavier when it is just comparing apples to oranges.

the SK is a great pedal, and it certainly has a legendary status, even if it is for its squeeking on since ive been lovin you.

enjoy it dude!

Here is my 20 year old Speed King alongside a similar design (twin-post, enclosed-spring Sonor). The German design and manufacture is... well, very German with impeccable engineering making it massively robust! Kinda like the "Tiger Tank" of foot pedals

Note the extermely large foot pedal and all chrome posts and wooden beater. It's a vintage 1960's higher end Sonor pedal and reminds me of the Jetson era..Chewie:

While it is great that someone is offering a service like this, there really is nothing new in what the guy is doing....Ludwig did basically that when they changed to the "black" version of the pedal. The new ones all have the nylon bushings, etc.

The key to preventing the need for this service is LUBRICATION. Basic maintenance, you know? If you use the right lube on a regular basis, the speed king will last many, many years. The problem ones you see on ebay all the time are just neglected, beat pieces of...well, you get the idea.....that never saw a drop of lube in the key pivot points EVER!

another sk fan here, have my original wfl, tore it apart last weekend, cleaned springs & bearings, lubed - good as new, and it's on my Slingy kit now for good (replacing the Pearl Eliminator with it's multitude of adjustments and cams). Much better feel and more speed to my old foot.

From section2

So... anybody want to buy a well-used DW 5000? :)

I do!

I use a vintage WFL Speedking but I want a DW 5000 too for the right price. What do you want for it? :)
