Picked up this WFL port-o-pac the other day. I didn't really want to pay that much for it, but I really wanted it in my collection. All original (hopefully) and looks like it will clean up like new. I've never seen this drum in person in 28 years of drumming. Fairly rare? Looks like they only made them for a year or two. Basically a 13x6 pioneer....but I LOVE my transition badge pioneer!
Soo... I probably over paid, but I really wanted it! Last viewed: 12 hours ago
My opinion: NEVER let anyone else tell you what something that you want is worth. All anyone can do is to tell you what they think something is worth -usually based upon other similar Ebay sales/non-sales. But, as I've said before, when it comes to items (like this) that are no longer being made, values will vary from day-to-day. One always has to consider the exception when it comes to these items.
I hate to be redundant, but the best example is the story of the Blue Oyster Jazz fest snare drum and the guy who was on a quest to find the exact-matching pattern to complete his kit. He found one very similar (but not exactly the pattern he was after) and paid $3K for it. Then someone on this forum posted a picture of his Blue Oyster pearl Jazz Fest and lo and behold it was the perfect one. so the guy who already had one that was very close wanted to buy the "perfect" one -even though he had just paid $3K for the one that was almost perfect....and so on.
See what I mean?
There is such a wide gap between certain drums and drums sets from different eras and for different reasons, there's just no way to gauge value...and especially if, for some intangible reason, something holds special value -like if it reminds you of when you were a kid or maybe a gig or an old friendship...or some kind of nostalgic reason. How can those kinds of things be factored into the equation? It's just a matter of two elements meeting up at an opportune time....or not.
Enjoy your drum!

Now that I think about it, I guess the price wasn't to bad. Around the same price as a Jazz Fest, but this drum, in my opinion is a better collectors piece. I'll post pics when it arrives.
You made my day! I've never seen nor heard of a port-o-pac before. Great to learn something new. I'll bet that little guy sounds amazing. Congratulations and I agree...it's worth what it's worth to YOU.

Great buy there! It feels so good when you're after something and it all comes together - no matter what the price.
I love the drums from the 50's. You made the right decision to go for it.
Congratulations on a very nice find!

Like a number of others have said...
Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is the cost of a rarity you need.
Great find, I'd never seen one of those. Please post more pix when you get it.
This drum is in the 1960 catalog, but not in the 63 so I guess they only made it for a couple years. And I stand corrected...it is actually 5x14.
So what's the difference or what's unusual about this snare compared to other Ludwig snares? Other than different badges and throws all Ludwig's look the same to me.
