Hi everyone,

Being on the lookout for a nice restoration project, I came across this sonor teardrop Chicago star (1966) (20-13-16). Condition is not 100% (pitted chrome etc) and some parts are missing. Snare is also non-Original, and cymbals have no marks on them. Seller is asking 450 euro (615 dollar), fixed price. What do you guys think? Jump on it, or pass on? If I would buy it, I would use it in a blues-jazz setting, although I'm thinking, for that amount of money, I should find better?

I would tell him to look closer at the cymbals...

99% of the are stamped...usually 3/4 the way out to the edge....on the top...

I dig Sonor's....I hear they sound like Gretsch....

That is a good deal. I have seen teardrop kits with less go for 500 Euros.

Yeah I'd say go for it. Those are some good sounding drums for the money. 3 ply beech shells with maple re-rings I think. And those cymbals might be Tyrkos, which were actually made in the Sonor factory. I have a super Tyrko ride and I love how it sounds.

I am kicking myself for not jumping on a few teardrop deals when I lived in Germany. At the time I was after Sonor's new stuff. Anyway great drums and a nice deal. I really recommend visiting the museum at the factory. Sonor days will be fun this year for sure!

Thanks for the input everyone! I called the guy to take a look at the drums within a few hours. It's a 90 minute drive from where I live, so hopefully no upleasant surprises... If I would pull the trigger and buy them, I will post some pictures here!

bummer... I drove 3+ hours yesterday, just to find out that most of the hardware chrome (and screws etc) on this drum were completely rusted... The wood seemed to be in ok condition, but also the wrap had some damages. Cymbals were Zynn and paiste dixie btw. I did not buy them... Still on the lookout for another nice set! (found also a 1968 premier in red oyster, but seller is asking 600...)

I guess you should learn from this...get closeup pics...saves a lot of heartaches/headaches...

I still make mistakes,and have been buying for close to 30 years so don't feel bad..!
