Slingy Experts...what did I just buy?

The tone control looks 60's to me, too...and thanks for the advice. I will definitely be trying out this method. If you look at the 2nd picture I posted of the butt plate, it sure looks like that is the overlay of wrap...but as you mentioned, I should be able to tell as soon as I take off a head.Snare should be here on Thursday and then investigation will begin!

Sounds like fun...let us know what you find!

What would be the best method to take the paint off without damaging the wrap? Wet sanding? I'm most likely going to rewrap it anyway, but I need to find out what's underneath that paint!

You could used Goof-Off to remove the paint..But I have a feeling that the drum is Not a covered drum..The over-lap would be under a lug,not at the snare bed.....Mikey

Good point, Mikey. I guess we'll find out for sure on Friday when she gets delivered. The suspense is getting to me...

Hey Mikey...I think the snare might actually be wrapped after all. I was looking through the For Sale section and spotted this pic of a '63 Artist model for sale. My '57 Super Gene Krupa snare is also overlapped in between lugs...just not at the snare bed. Interesting...

Aaron,

I know very little about Slingerland drums but I dug up some pictures of a Hollywood Ace I once had. It also has the overlap at the snare bed in between lugs.

Good luck with that project, should be fun.

Aaron - Forget all the solvents... get a bottle of Motzenbocker's Grafitti Remover #4. I stripped some nasty oil-based paint off of a Cleveland Rogers Mardi Gras kit. I was worried because the wrap was so rare on that kit. The Motzenbocker's got it off easily, quickly and left the wrap underneath clean and shiny. Spray on, let sit for a few minutes, wipe off. No muss, no fuss. Try it.

Good luck, I hope you find that somebody covered up a 'rare' finish!

Thanks for the info, Stef! I remember that Slingy snare...I believe I shipped it to you, right? Good to hear from you, my friend. I'm dying to get back to Belgium! Maybe 2015.

Thanks for the tip, John. Sounds like that is the stuff I need! I hope I find a rare finish also!

Anyone want to takes guesses as to what kind of wrap is under the paint?!?

My guess would be ginger-aled silver sparkle! Sometimes silver sparkle gets blotchy/brown spots with age and it would be the kind of thing that would motivate somebody to paint the drum. Just spit-balling here. I'm hoping it's a rare finish that somebody just thought was ugly at the time.

That's a good guess, John.

Question for you...how do you suggest I remove the paint from the bagde? Could this graffiti remover possibly remove the black enamel from a black and gold badge? At least that's what I'm assuming I have.
