I can tell just by looking at that drum that the finish is "custom" -meaning that probably the owner refinished the drum, himself. You'll never find it in a reference catalog.

Could be an honest "omission" that the finish isn't original...or not. Very smart that you asked the right questions, probably good sounding drums though....

I have looked at the Gibson Slingerland site and that is exactly what I thought it was.

eBay listing has other pics the drums have re-rings and mufflers. Pretty sure that rules them out as being Gibson era drums

I saw this set almost a month ago! The serial number, while out of focus, seems to date it to 1976. The kit is the Super Rock No. 51N. Check it out here, shown in the 1976 Slingerland catalog: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/catalogs/slingerland/1976_slingerland_catalog_25.jpg You can see it's showing the same shell dimensions and the 160 Setomatic tom holder. By the 1977-78 catalog, the Super Setomatic holder was standard.

The big mystery is the finish! To my eyes, it appears to be original. Certainly no mention of this finish at all, but it may be a one-off or limited edition finish.

You can tell from the badge grommet that it is original. Slingerland used the really nice aluminum grommets with the thick crown. This set looks original to me and offered at a very fair price!

That gromet looks to have been pushed back in with glue. The "orange peel" look of the finnish don`t look like the drum was finnished at the factory !! They spin them and sand in between coats to prevent that orange peel look !!

That's what I thought when I saw the finish, too. But, it really does look like a nice set of drums and there is a chance that it could have been a special order.

For some reason, I seem to remember that there was an ad campaign that I think was for Kool cigarettes where a similar green color was used to mirror the Kool green -like a green piano or a green racing car, etc. I know it's a wild shot, but it could have been made, by Slingerland, to fit into some kind of ad.

But, yeah, that orange peel finish and the gob of (?) on the inside of the grommet...and what are those two round head bolts on the lower section of that one tom tom? Or, is that a reflection? At this point, I can only say that I've never seen that finish on ANY drum set before -any brand at any time.

It would sure be nice to see the interiors!
