Slingerland student snare question Last viewed: 3 days ago

Hi to All,

Some time ago we picked up this Slingerland 6 lug Student Snare. I have researched the information guides in the forum but have not been able to come up when this snare was possible made. The serial number is 39653 Black and silver badge that appears to be etched. The strainer is the Rapid type but appears have a larger knurl knob which doesn’t seem to match the time frame of the serial number. The drum appears to be completely original and in great shape. The red on the hoop in the picture is glare. It needed a little tlc but once new heads were put on , An Evans J1 for the batter and a Remo Diplomat on the snare head it is one great sounding snare for recording Jazz or Big Band with. I have some pictures if anyone can help with the ID.

Thanks to everyone in advance for all the help

Hi to All,

Does anyone know the approximate time frame when Slingerland reset their serial numbers? If I'm reading the chart correctly in the Slingerland section this happened around 1970. If that's correct a drum with serial number of 39653 would be around 1970 or 1971. Like I had mentioned the black and silver badge appears to be etched which would support this. I was going to try and post a message to Dr. Wenk but it seems the link is broken. I'm sorry about all the questions, just into this history thing at the moment about some of the drums we own. Mikey and several others finally help me to figure out when our old Drumcraft kit was made.(A big thanks to all). Again thanks for all the help!!!!

Hi DR!

If your drum is a 39K serial, I believe you're correct in the 70-71 time frame. But there were a lot of people smokin wacky backy back then, so this so called Vintage Slingy Drum Guru might have been stoned as hell & we might just be dreaming all of this...oh jeeez, did I say that out loud? LOL!

Kidding!...I think you're right on target!
