Slingerland snare drum help-Radio King? Last viewed: 3 days ago

Loading...

Hi all. This is my first post so I'm not exactly sure how to post with pictures but here goes. I was hoping to get some assistance from some Slingerland gurus in identifying a snare drum. I suspect it could be a 1930's or early 1940's Radio King. The drum is an odd size (actual size is 6 3/4" x 14") with 8 lugs and has some heft to it. The badge looks like it fits that time period and all the original shell parts seem to be there (lugs, strainer, tone control, etc). The batter hoop may not be original as it uses clips. The wrap is thin and peeling so I think that will need to be replaced. Hurts the value, I know, but I don't think it can be saved.

If anyone has some insight into this drum I'd appreciate it.

You have the Gene Krupa model radio king, it is considered a 6 1/2x14" model. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/catalogs/slingerland/1940_slingerland_pg4a_large.jpg

your Radio king is in the date period of 1946-1949 by the 3 point strainer. If you have the bottom rim post pics of the snare gate on it ok?

From what I can see on the pics that wrap could be saved. Please, Do the impossible to save that gorgeous wrap. The drum will take a 40% hit on its value if you rewrap it. More pictures of the affected area would help us to point you on the right way to try to fix the problem.

Beautiful snare. Your questions have been answered but I'd like to add that to me, it looks like the wrap is coming up at the seam. That is pretty common and its an easy fix. Please be patient and wait for more advice on restoring this gem.

And welcome!

Wow, you guys are good! Thanks for all the help. As requested, here is a picture of the ss hoop. One of the gates is missing. I don't know if I can find one or not. Also, I have included more pictures of the peeling wrap. The wrap overlaps by about 6" at the seam. It looks like someone may have tried regluing it at some point. The old glue comes off pretty easily on the bottom section. What is the best way to try to repair it?

Also, as I don't believe the batter side hoop goes with the drum (since it uses clips), is there a good place other than ebay to try to find one that fits the time period?

your correct on the top rim it isn't the correct one. it should be like the bottom one with the tension rod collars on it, the pic of the bottom rim can you show the bottom rim gate only I need to see either the screws or rivets. to help close down the date down.

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge. The gate uses slotted screws.

I have a few other older snare drums I picked up in the 80's I might post for some input. Some I am pretty sure I know what they are, but at least one is questionable.

a lot of the time with Radio kings you have to date them by the hardware that is on them your rim is the 30's early 40's model, but the 3 point strainer is late 40's, thanks for posting the pic.
