Slingerland Set-o-matic

Hi VDF knowledge central,

Greetings from Down Under.

Just here looking for a general consensus on the above mentioned, I have opportunity to have a look at and maybe pic up the aforementioned. I've never owned (or to be honest) played a Slingerland kit. There are two I can look at:

8 X 12, 9 X 13, 10 X 14, 16 X 16, 14 X 20 in BLUE AGATE.

MAPLE SHELLS

13 16 & 20 FACTORY MATCHED DRUMS - BLACK & GOLD NILES BADGES

12 - 60's - BLACK & GOLD NILES BADGE

14" MOUNTED TOM 1970 - BLACK AND SILVER NILES BADGE

16" FLOOR TOM HAS 2" LONG SPLIT ON THE WRAP NEAR THE LEG MOUNT.

ALL CHROME IN GOOD CONDITION WITH MINOR PITTING ON SOME LUGS

BASS DRUM T's & CLAWS ORIGINAL SOME CLAWS WITH SLIGHT RUST

SOME SHELLS HAVE MINOR SCRATCHES & SCUFFS THAT ARE HARD TO NOTICE

INNER SHELLS STAMPED 'P' AND IN GOOD COND.

AND:

8 X 12, 9 X 13, 16 x 18,14 X 22 in RED TIGER

MAPLE SHELLS

MID TO LATE 60's SLINGERLAND RED TIGER PEARL - TOM SCRATCHES ON TOP OF THE BASS

16" FLOOR TOM HAS SCRATCHES IN ONE AREA - 18" FLOOR TOM HARDLY ANY SCRATCHES

MOUNTED TOMS HAVE SOME SCRATCHES & SCUFFS

ALL CHROME IN GOOD CONDITION WITH MINOR PITTING ON SOME LUGS

BASS DRUM T's & CLAWS ORIGINAL & GOOD CHROME

INNER SHELLS STAMPED 'P' AND IN GOOD COND.

THESE DRUMS LOOK LIKE THEY'VE DONE A FEW SHOWS & HAVE BATTLE SCARS ON THE WRAP

22" - 16" - 13" - 12" - FACTORY MATCHED WITH BLACK & GOLD NILES BADGES

18" FLOOR TOM BOUGHT SEPARATE WITH LUDWIG LEG MOUNTS -HAS EXTRA HOLES BUT CAN BE COVERED WITH ORIGINAL MOUNTS

13" TOM (362) BOUGHT SEPARATE - FADED ON ONE SIDE - BLACK & GOLD NILES

Anyhoo, That's all I've got so far but I'm interested in all your thoughts. Playability(is that a word?), hardware, sound etc etc

I know you'll all do me proud

Thanks in advance

Tony

Either or both could be very nice drum sets. Set-O-Matic era sets are (in my opinion) everything that Ludwig or Gretsch sets of the same era wish they could be for quality and sound. And, the Slingy sets will be considerably more affordable.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

As the proud (2nd)owner/operator of Slingerland White Tiger Pearls from that era I vote for the Red Tiger Pearl kit.

But I am biased.

Sounds like you really can't lose, though. Enjoy and welcome to the Slingerland club!

Thanks for the responses guys. The kit will be a general practice/gig kit, and I'm currently playing a mix of music from jazz/blues up to Rock but not Death metal etc etc

I'm just looking for a nice good all rounder and the price (s) seem right on these. I'll check them out as soon as I can and make the decision...

Strangely enough I have a cpl of old Star MIJ snares which I've given a little love to ( thanks Jonnistix for the inspiration) one in Red Tiger and the other in a very similar Blue Agate... maybe both kits need a home lol

Keep the thoughts coming...

Ciao for now

More rock, the bigger drums. More jazz the smaller drums. I am partial to 20" Bass drums and the blue finish, but that is entirely personal preference. I'd buy the blue kit and sell the 14" tom
