My local drum shop has a nice WMP Slingerland kit for sale. The shop owner says that he believes it's a 60s Radio King. He's selling the kit for $450 which I can't afford but he said he maybe could sell me the snare for $150. I don't have any pictures of it but I'm just curious as to what signs I need to look for to determine what the drum is, what year it is, and what it's worth. There was no paper tag or anything on the inside. It had a gold/black badge. The muffler was a double-circle muffler and the shell seemed to be solid mahogany(though I'm not 100% on that.). All the hardware(lugs, rims, etc.) seemed right on it. Please help asap I don't wanna miss a good deal.

Definitely not solid mahogany. If the interior was mahogany, then it's no doubt a 3 ply drum. Should have StickSaver hoops. Additionally, check for number of lugs. 8 lugged drums command quite a bit more money than the 6 luggers.

It did have sticksavers and I believe it was 8-lug. Not sure why I didn't pay better attention to that. I think it was a 14x6 or 6.5.

Check the strainer, it should be a 3 point and the butt side with the extended bracket.
$150.00 is on the low side by quite a bit if it's a 60's Radio King.
Also any signs of it being rewrapped; ie if it looks too good it probably is, just a FYI.

If it had a mahogany interior, then the snare drum is likely the Hollywood Ace model. That would be a 3 ply shell: maple, poplar, mahogany plies. Aces had the rapid strainer, while Radio Kings came with a 3-point strainer or clamshell in the 50-60's. $150 is a good price for a Hollywood Ace in good condition and a steal if its a Radio King. Ive added some pics of my '61 Hollywood Ace (with rapid strainer) and '57 Radio King (with clamshell strainer) to help you id that snare.
If you can take a look on the inner shells, try to find some date stamps. Also, take note of the badges on the shells. The bass drum should definitely have a badge (likely a brass/black badge if its mid 50-late 60's). The toms may not have badges unless they were produced in the late 60's. Take a look at the Slingerland drums link under the Vintage Drum Identification tab at the top of this page for pics of Slingerland badges and a timeline to help you date the kit. You can also check out Coopers Vintage Drums online for a comprehensive history (with pictures :)) of Slingerland drums.
Good luck and keep us posted! Oh, and $450 for the entire kit would be a great price if its in playable condition!
Thanks for the info. Helping out a lot. I stupidly didn't get a great look at the strainer(I was with my girlfriend and trying not to drool over it too much). The main thing I remember was that it had what seemed to be a lot of screws on each side(the butt side and the strainer side). I'm going back tomorrow to return something and I'll get a better look at it. I'm gonna try and trade in my '73 Gretsch aluminum snare for it. I'll give you guys a heads up after that.
Looks like it IS a Radio King. It matches the lugs, badge, and strainer of the drum in the picture below but with strings instead of the belt on the strainer and the arm attachment on the throw-off is missing. Looks like it's 14x5.5. Probably gonna see if he'll take a trade with my '73 Gretsch aluminum snare. We'll see.
If it has the three point strainer, but a mahogany inner ply, it could be a student model radio king; at least, I think it can. Does it have little metal clips attaching from the tension rods to the rim? If so, it would be a student model radio king. Try for the trade - you can get a reproduction arm for the three point strainer if you like. Good luck!

No, it has the regular sticksaver rims on it.
