Slingerland purple satin flame 12/14/18/22 advice Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hello all -

I have a line on a Slingy PSF kit with Black and Brass Niles Oval Badges {1963-1969} & am wondering about general views & value (haven't touched one since my 1st kit in the 80's, long gone). It has a snare w/ the Silver 70's badge.

Any comments appreciated - Chris

Very cool! The color was called Lavender Satin Flame and is fairly rare. This was either the Modern Solo or New Rock Outfit. Same drums, but different hardware. Your actual drum sizes are 8x12, 9x13, 16x16, 14x22 and a 5x14 snare drum. Satin flame finishes are very prone to scratching and "spider-webbing" around the lugs. How does the finish on this kit look?

It also appears that the Setomatic is the first-generation aluminum brackets. I'd swap them out for the later chromed version, which are relatively easy to find.

As to value, if the shells, wrap and hardware (lugs, tension rods, hoops) are in good condition, I could see this easily selling for $800+. Retailers might put a price of well over $1000. As has been mentioned by others, Slingerland drums just don't seem to command what Ludwig and Rogers go for.

Overall, a nice kit in a cool and rare finish!

Thanks for the detailed response, idrum4fun.

I have not seen the kit in the flesh. This is another inquiry that came my way, & seeing that I know nothing @ Sling what better place is there to ask about them? Isn't it telling that I didn't know they were lavender (which is what the seller wrote they were)?

I have a general feel on what to offer, which is far less than what I normally do with Ludwig, Rogers, etc.

Best - Chris

If the price is right, go for it. If, for any reason, to get that pillow out of the floor tom. You'll love them once you get the tuning dialed in. Excellent bass drum. The COB snare is an excellent sounding drum too. Just keep in mind that once these are under stage lights they look very pink. If you can handle that, get em. Idrum4fun is very correct about the finish though. They must be handled with care to avoid scratching even further but on a stage, the swirls will stand out far more than any imperfections. According to Rob Cook's Slingerland book, this finish was used from 70 - 73 so this set could've been the last of the black n brass badges. It also has what looks to be the early version of the 70's 80's BD t-rods, however, I'm not exactly sure when these t-rods were introduced. Maybe someone else here can elaborate on that. I'd like to know myself.

1981 Slingerland Magnum 8pc Pewter Silk
1971 Slingerland Avante 60N Lavender Satin Flame
1976/7 Ludwig Vistalite 5pc Yellow
1980's Ludwig Rocker 5pc Black
2004 Gretsch Catalina Birch Caribbean Blue
1998 Noble & Cooley Alloy Classic 14X4.75
1922 Bower Snare

Thanks again guys for the comments. I hope to check them out next week sometime. I'm kind of excited to see them since they look a bit sturdy & promising - perhaps more than I've allowed myself to think of Sling.

I will update if I end up w/ the kit - Chris

Had the same set in green satin flame from 1967. Great sounding kit and I kick myself every day for getting rid of it. You should grab 'em. Love the color.....hey you could start a "Strawberry Alarm Clock" tribute band! OK I'm stuck in the 60s.

The good Dr. CJ Wenk will tell us this finish was offered between 1968 and 1975 in his articles on our own Drum Guide site.

Link..........

Lavender Satin Flame Pearl does appear in the '68 Slingerland catalog.

Rob Cook wrote a helluva book, but with thousands of facts to juggle, there are, quite understandably, a few errors here and there.

I couldn't offer an opinion on value other than, to me, they are worth more than they would sell for.

Thanks John, Paul, George, Ringo, and Ed.................Yes Sir

Get em! What a great kit!

Its a shame that these more rare Slingy wraps dont pull down 1K+ all day long. What great sounding drums. I bet if its on CL he takes $600 for it...which is a steal IMO.
