Slingerland Marching Snare and Bass

Loading...

I have a Niles Slingerland Marching Snare and Bass. I believe it may be from the Legion Heir series. 1963 is the first year where the hardware matches what is on these drums, but it appears that the hardware was used up through the 70's.

The snare is 13x9, and the bass is 24x8 approximately, but I couldn't find any catalogs with that size bass.

Anyone know what color these are or can provide a better approximation for the year?

Do Slingerland serial numbers have any meaning?

Thanks!

Yep, the serial numbers will ID the year of the badge, and maybe the drum.

If I'm matching the badge correctly to the examples on DrCJW's page o' badges, it looks like the 1970-72 version.

As for the serial numbers... You can get a rough idea of the drum's age by comparing its serial number to DrCJW's serial number timeline. Slingerland serial numbers weren't issued sequentially. They basically had bins of numbered badges and randomly pulled badges from those bins to affix to drums.

They are sequential enough to get a very close (within a year or less) date of manufacture. Other features of their drums.... hardware and set configs can narrow a date as well.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Here are the serial #'s:

Bass - 13942

Snare - 15063

I noticed that there is a handwritten "M" on the inside of the snare. Looking through the grommet hole on the bass, it looks like there is a Z or a 2 inside the bass. I haven't removed the heads on either drum, but couldn't see any date stamps looking through the snare reso.

I would put it in the 1970 range based on the raised lettering on the badge (unless I am feeling dirt) and the relatively low serial number.

I need to go through more catalogs to figure out the color.

I bought these on a whim thinking my kids would have fun marching up / down the street with the neighborhood kids. My 12 year old didn't see the fun in that. I haven't mentioned it to the 8 year old yet for fear he would want to do it at 6:00 this morning. Excited

The drums are much lighter than I would have guessed, especially the snare. I need to find some slings/straps at the old mom/pop music store nearby, otherwise we'll have to figure out something else to use.

If the enthusiam by the kids to play them isn't there, these may go up on the auction block.
