Slingerland - are they less loved than other US brands? Last viewed: 42 seconds ago

I am for sure a Slingo "Diehard" , but at the end of the day I loved playing a set of Ludwigs and several Pearl kits along the way. As far as sound goes I think size, heads & tuning are the main influences in sound, not so much even the shells or brand.

I remember a 10CC concert in the 70's with the two drummers sharing fills and picking up rolls 1/2 way around each of their kits. One on Ludwig & the other playing Slingerland. The tonal blend between the two kits was such that if you were not focused on their hands, you would not have had a clue who was playing what.

I thought I read a couple of comments in post in reference to or when Slingerland was in business or when they were still makeing drums.

The Gibson company owns Slingerland and it looks like they are makeing as good American drums as anyone out there today. Was just checking out the site and some of the kits. They look pretty darn nice to me! Love this jazz kit.

That site is a million years old. Gibson isn't big on site maintenance. They stopped making drums probably 8 years ago. Too bad, they were good drums.

Yeah I remember When Gene Krupa And Buddy Rich Played Tama's and Pearls, Oh wait oh hell no they didn't those two offshore brands will never have the Brand Recognition or History of Slingerland, please show me a 70 year old Tama or Pearl, I'll sure gladly show you a Radio king snare drum that is this old. with higher resale value than a whole kit from your touted offshore brands.

I ain't sayin nothin about SOUND, but let's face it- beaver tails break apart and the new Slingy lugs made off shore are better than the old stuff.

I've given a lot of consideration to building some boutique level slingy replicas.

The modern formula lugs certainly are much better than the old ones -a rarity w/ today's cheap sourcing and bottom line marketing.

I believe some gladstone shells would be better than the classic too... esp. w/ nice level edges and consistent routing. NTM true round shells!

My 1930 Radio King is 100% original in fact all my Slingerlands are 100% original, and my Radio King is 75 years old. Still haven't seen No Pearl, Tama or Yamaha's that is that old?

To be fair, Gibson has been quite busy fighting off SWAT raids by the Feds for possibly violating An Indian law that India did not contest. Tough to do site maintenance when you are busy passing out flak jackets.

As to Slingerland, I do think it came down to marketing. Ludwig had the larger and more prominent roster of "contemporary" artists. To a middle school student in the 70's, Slimgerland seemed to be from a byegone era; even for a kid who thought Buddy Rich was a monster. I think Gretsch was successful with "That Geat Getsch Sound" campaign and that helped keep them alive.

I love Slingy's now though!
