Slingerland 3 ply "spirit" Niles kit

Loading...

Picked up an 80's Slingy kit on a whim, from a local "Offer up" ad. They have niles badges, 3 ply shells with speckle painted interiors, and the pearl style tom mounts.

This is the "spirit 3500" Setup according to the old catalogs. 8-10-12-13 rack toms and a 16x16 FT. 22" kick

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/slingerland_drum_sets/1980-slingerland-drumsets13.jpg

The drums are pretty rough, but not that far gone. the rims have chrome peeling off of them and it needs new heads. Other than that, I got some cool slingerland labeled stands which are the same design as North drums hardware from the era.

Should I strip these and part them out, or would somebody want the kit (I figured though, at least they are Trad. sized toms with resonant heads.. and 8" and 10" toms in this configuration dont pop up often)

I wouldn`t strip them of their parts...Keep them together...Pass them on to someone that will take on the project...

Just my opinion...

Cheers

I wasnt getting any bites on these so I took them all apart to clean them up. Theyre actually pretty good drums.. I might keep them for a gigging kit after I add real wood hoops to the kick.

I saw a mention of the inner black speckle paint, somewhere online, and the guy called it a fiberglass spray. Is the stuff just black paint or is there some type of resin involved, in an attempt to give the shell more rigidity?

Imagine those drums having a really killer color wrap.

Would anyone even be discussing stripping them out if that were the case?

I vote for a re-wrap. I bet so long as the edges are good, some new heads and a good tuning might surprise you sonically. Nothing unappealing to some 3ply shells with quality wood. Is IS quality wood right? ...and Slinger hardware...lugs/hoops....what's not to love?

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

+1 on a re-wrap. Shells are the same layup as '63-'81 but without the re-rings. Interior is often gray speckle.
