Slingerland 1975/76 vs ludwig 60s Last viewed: 15 seconds ago

Im new to the whole vintage drum, and drums is general, but really want a vintage set.

i live in Norway, so the used marked arent great, but this set came up on the market, he wants 2300us for the whole set, only without cymbals.

Is it worth that price?

I dont really care about the finish, i bellive that Cordova is not the most wanted? but rare, but i only care that it sounds good. is this the super rock set or the classic rock?

Slingerland 14x6,5 cobber SD, 14x10" og 15x10" tom, 16x14" og 18x16" , 24x14" bass yahmaha hardware.

The only alternative for sale in norway now is this Ludwig 50/60s 20" 16" 13" 14" he wants 1800us for it. Is that a better alternative? anybody can tell what ludwig this is? any ideas about what these to sets are valued at?

If i would buy internationally i would need to pay for shipping and 25% import tax, so i could shop for maximum 2000us must include snare. But i would really prefer to find something locally.

Thanks a million to anyone that can help me, im torn apart and have a real what to chose breakdown.

Best regards

Julian

Hi - I'm not a Slingerland expert but I do own a Ludwig set similar to the one you can buy - the wrap is called blue sky pearl - mine is a 1971 kit with 3 ply maple - poplar - maple shells. Based on the badges, your's is an earlier model - possibly late 50's / early 60's and I think the shells on those are mahogany - poplar - mahogany. The Ludwig's were very popular rock kits in the 60's and 70's but some jazz players used them too. Would be interesting to note the sizes on that one 20 / 12 / 14 or 22 / 13 / 16. As I said I don't know the Slingerlands but if it is a vintage, warm Ringo kind of tone that you are after, you cannot go wrong with the Ludwig. They truly are - in my opinion - some of the best sounding kits ever built. The price obviously depends on condition - 1800 is on the high side but not crazy out of kilter. Have you checked out Purplechord in the Netherlands - Beppe Quirolli often has some good buys there aswell. Purplechord.com. Hope this helps. Did I mention that you will not regret buying the Ludwigs, ..... just saying :-)

I think the Slingerland shell sizes are incorrect. I think the toms look to be 13,14,&18.. that with a 24" BD would make that the "Super Rock" Kit. The 16" is an (add on) single lug drum...

Cheers

John

Price on the Slingy seems way high. Especially high if they are 5ply versus 3ply. Price on the Ludwig if they are all original drums purchased together with no extra holes ,which they seem to be from the pics, is a much better deal and more realistically priced. Nice matching Jazzfest on that one

Actually upon second look the Jazzfest may not be matching. The hardware on the kits look post 1964 with baseball bat tone controls and Jazzfest has the round tone control. Could have still been purchased together but something to consider when looking at overall value. Badges and serial numbers should tell the story

Ludwig all the way..Seems like a fairly normal price, and in my opinion is much more versatile.. Slingerland is priced way too high..Plus, i'm more of a Ludwig guy and think they sound much better, but that's all subjective ! ;)

I say go for the Ludwig !

I am with most here. I would go with the Ludwig's also.

The only thing that catches my eye is it looks like it could be a re-wrap.

The badges seem loose and crooked. The bass hoops look like they have been touched up. Everything looks too good. The placement of the floor tom badge and the spurs would make me think later than late 50's early 60's.No tom mount on rack? White paint inside bass drum would be later also but not totally sure on that one. But all aside beautiful looking kit especially if original.

Like someone else said badges could help identify.

Wrong era spurs on the Ludwig. Neither seem to be a very good deal.

For less money you could get a correct '60s or early '70s Slingerland shipped from the US...even with shipping and your import tax you can do better than the two sets shown.

Once again, Rich K is telling it like it is.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Didn't Ludwig have hide away curved spurs in 1969 ?

I could've sworn i once saw a late 60's Ludwig with original curved spurs

somewhere..Hmmmm
