Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son - Phil Ehart.

There's a single flam on beat 4 of the drum entrance as well as a number of other flams throughout the song. Hence, a rudiment other than a single stroke roll in a song that is considered rock and has had frequent air play from the time it was released in 1976 right up to today. I can't tell if it's a right flam or a left flam though. I'm sure Phil could tell us.

The single flam is a great rudiment to use, among other things, as a musical exclamation point.

From Toto's 1988 Album "The seventh One" there's a Track called 'Mushanga'. The great late Jeff Procaro explains that nice Beat in his Instructional Tape. I practiced this like crazy in '92 and had a lot of Fun and Progress thanks to this.

*Gets to the full Beat Version from 2:05 on talkin about a Snare Drum Solo' that represents the Rudimental Basis for the Beat.

I do not have a working knowledge of rudiments, but with all of the monster fills, and beats, Neil Peart has put together, I would have to guess there are more than a few rudiments to be hand in there?

Also, the song Jump by Van Halen and the roto-tom or octabon fill (during the keyboard intro) sounds like something rudimental?? Again, I can't tell you what it is though.

Just two shots in the dark here........

have a wonderful evening

I'll go and listed to the top 40 then get back to you.

In the meantime Dave Grohl uses 4 stroke ruffs in the 2nd verse of No One Knows on Songs For The Deaf. pretty cool.

Labi Siffre "A Little More Line" Around 40 seconds in is a Single Stroke 5 (or 5 Stroke Ruff if you prefer).

I'll have to brush up on my Top 40, I'll get to you then.

p.s. RRL RRL/LLR LLR triplets have been referred to as Flow triplets or Bounce Triplets to me over the years. Also as open Drags too. Swiss Triplets without the Flam, whilst I understand the idea, is no way to really explain it. I love playing Swiss Triplets with a Flat Flam on 2 surfaces. Play on Ride and Snare for killer Shuffle.

The Rim/Stick work in Bastille's Pompeii has lots of 4 stroke Ruffs going on.

Dick Dales "Misirilou" has loads of 4 stroke Ruffs going on.

I reckon the fills in "A Message To You Rudy" by The Specials is 5 Stroke Rolls (doubles), maybe some are Ruffs though.

For fun checkout the open Seven Stroke Rolls on "Hamburger Midnight" by Little Feat that makes the groove. Brilliant!
