Rogers...Need the basic scoop Last viewed: 10 hours ago

What are the basic differences with the various Rogers 60s drumsets? I'm thinking I might pick up one with a 20" kick, but would like it to mirror Al Jackson. I'm a huge fan of his work.

Specifically, I'm trying to determine which series I should be looking into for his type of sound....Tower, Holiday, etc. I also know that he had a Ludwig mixed in (perhaps the high tom?), but I'm not concerned with that.

Not to be a wise guy, but search and likely find this info.

Be easier if you tell us what the labels, wrap and sizes are, than to explain the history of Rogers.

Check this link for a start http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Al_Jackson.html

As far as 60's rogers goes, all of that era had swivo hardware, with pre 1963 drums having bread and butter lugs, which are said to be made for use with calf heads, and I have heard can crack when tuned to higher tension with mylar heads, some of the earlier drums had 3 ply shells, and I have heard a rounder bearing edge giving them a different sound than the post 1962 drums. The 1963 and later drums had beavertail lugs which are sturdy as heck, and 5 ply maple/poplar shells w rerings, and had a sharper edge than Sling and Luds of that era,the snares had the sharpest thinnest edge, the toms more rounded and fatter, with the BDs even more so,like DW does today. I have a 1967 Rogers kit and they are sort of in between a vintage and modern sound, and they feel and sound different than the vintage ludwigs I have owned.

The kit in the pic in that link is a late 60's Rogers kit with beavertail lugs, and a center double tom mount, so is a Dayton or Fullerton era kit. All swivo hardware including the stands. That 20-12-16 setup with a Ludwig acrolite snare would sound sweet!

Thanks all! I ended up going with a sweet Ludwig Downbeat from the 60s in champagne. It made more sense because I already have a champagne 60s super classic in the larger sizes, so I'll now be able to mix and match sizes between the two kits of the same color. It's even coming with the matching 4x14 snare which I've been wanting.
