Thanks to all you people on this site, I am now addicted to squandering money on drums! Last week I bought that Sonor, and now I have an audition set for Sat. with a new guitarist. I went to his studio this morning to check it out, and he sold me a 1963 rogers gold sparkle 20/12/14 kit for $250 - Now I don't know if that's a good deal, but I am assuming it is. The wrap is in really good shape, the stickers on the inside say Holiday - Grey primer - Also, he is keeping the snare though. Now for the bad, the tom, floor tom, and bass are missing lugs and rims - The lugs that are on the bass are bow tie - What's cool too, is that on the floor tom, the round mount swivels for the legs - Does that mean that this is a swivelmatic set? Will post pics when I go pick these up - Thanks! band2

Holy cr*p! Well done. Deal of the century. Do you mean the "tension rods" on the bass are bow tie? Presumably they are bread and butter lugs, they may well be missing because they have cracked. You should be able to find replacements on eBay. Check the other lugs that are on the kit for hairline cracks as b&b lugs are prone to breaking. I guess they are 3 ply jasper shells, lovely drums and great sizes too.

Pics will help. 1963 could be Beavertails or B&B.
Definitely three ply shells, and keller.

When did rogers stop using Jasper shells?

Rogers quit Jasper shells before Beavertail Lugs were introduced. Some of the earliest Powertone snare drums have B&B lugs and keller three ply shells. They are from early 1963.

Jasper shells were done away with in 61. To identify a Jasper shell, some things to look for are: wider rerings, flatter 60 {not 45 degrees} bearing edges, most were assembled originally with square nuts. Serials under 24xxx and many also have a a smaller muffler nob. Things that could change are the square nuts and muffler, but not the bearing edges and wider rerings. I would be willing to trade original Cleveland beavertailed version shells for these. Please dont drill them. Otherwise I have many of the parts you seek. Let me know.
Thanks for all the info!!! Unfortunately, I have to wait two weeks to give him the cash- Man, are those going to be some long, lonely nights laying in bed! As soon as I get them I will post pics immediately - the interiors are dull grey primer and it says Holiday - the floor tom rod holders are round and they rotate - I think that means that they are swivelmatics, I'm not sure. But definitely will need rims, lugs, and so forth. I would like to make this as original as possible unless it's a hack job once I show you all the pics. Thanks! Dave
Sounds like you made a really great score, Dave. Even after you replace all the missing parts, you would have gotten a 3-ply Rogers kit for less than half price.
Good going!

Swivomatic was the name of the whole 60s era series of Rogers Hardware. It applied to the floor tom mounts, tom mounts, spurs, etc.
That your floor tom mounts rotate.......... means they need to be taken off the shell and the backside of the mount needs to be peened tight to the oval plate. This will stop the spinning and make the mount and legs stable. This is a must do repair. The more you allow this movement, the more likely you are to do irreparable damage to the mounts. It really is an easy fix.
