I have recently come into possession of a 5x14 COB 70's Dynasonic, and I'm trying to figure some things out. Basically, it is a friends and I have it on loan until I decide whether I want to buy it from him or not.
It sounds great, the shell and hoops are in round, but he doesn't have the snare bridge. So since it doesn't have bearing edges, you can only get the snares so tight. They still rattle, which really limits the versatility of the drum. I'm basically weighing my options. I can buy the drum, and buy a snare bridge off ebay and take it from there. But... I don't love the supersensitive style systems, since it would be my go to drum, and would prefer the simplicity of the standard throw off. I am wondering how difficult the snare tension adjustments are with this system, I know vertically they are easy, but how hard is it to go from super cranked snare, to nice and loose and gushy? I record a lot and play a lot of different styles live, so this is important to me.
That being said, is it completely unimaginable that I could add a snare bed to this snare? I know that seems like a lot of trouble, and possibly blaspheme.... But I have access to a high end drum shop (they built the rest of my custom kit) so if it could be done, it wouldn't be a difficulty.
Basically, I love old 5x14 COB snares, and would ideally be looking for a Supra, but my friend offered me this drum dirt cheap, so I want to see if I can make it work. It does have some advantages over the supras: It seems a bit drier, and also seem to hold its tuning better, which is awesome. Help me! What is your experience (if any) with some of my concerns?
Thanks.
