Roger Tower snare with and without muffler Last viewed: 3 days ago

Loading...

I am aware that the snare could have been purchased with or without a muffler. Does this have any impact on the value of this drum in todays market.

Also, I read that the prep was different on the tower vs the PT..

Can someone explain what this prep is referring to

The Powertone is advertised as having no snare beds. The Tower should.

The value wouldn't be affected by the muffler being factory installed or not. The value WOULD be affected if the muffler was factory installed but missing.

I thought everyone said the shells are identical on the PT and Tower.

Can you confirm that this is in fact a difference

The beds, shell, etc are the same. Difference is the faceplate (only, since the rest of the strainer is the same) and a different butt. Also had no t/c, but it was optional.

Towers are a good buy usually, just because of the lack of good information and the misinformation abounding about them. A lot of people think they are a lesser drum, but, I would gladly take a Tower snare drum any day.

I can not confirm with 100% accuracy as I have never owned a wood Powertone snare. However, I can speak to what I have read and discussed with others.

The shells are identical, yes, as is the hardware, except for the throwoff and butt plate. The literature (brochures) go out of their way to advertise the fact that the wooden Powertone snare has no snare bed. This is not mentioned in regards to the Tower snare drum, which leads me to believe that they DO have factory snare beds, since that is the norm for snare drums. That, and I owned a Tower snare, which had snare beds, which I assumed to be factory original (but, I could be wrong).

I have a wood Tower snare and it has snare beds. They are very slight however. Not much there at all. I don't have a wood Powertone. I do have a Holiday and it has snare beds.

I would bet the bed on the Holiday is visibly deeper than that on the Tower.

I just compared my one Tower to my three Powertones.

1965 Cleveland 5x14, number 110xx

1966 Cleveland 5x14, number 173xx

Tower Cleveland 5x14, number 53xx, which I believe makes it a 64 or 65

All appear to have an identical bed profile. Slight, but visible. None have been cut. All appear original.

Hey Ploughman, your correct, the snare bed on my Holiday is deeper than on my Tower. The one on the Tower isn't much. I can understand how someone could just casually look at it and assume there isn't one. They are awesome snare drums though. I stopped using my Jazzfest and now use my Tower with my Ludwig kit.

Attached are pictures of my Tower snare drum, which I converted to a Powertone by the use of a Swivomatic strainer and butt. The butt was installed with a custom-made adapter plate. The tone control was factory installed. The other difference between the two drums is that the Tower has a flat gray interior, while the Powertone has a gloss gray interior.
