Restoring my Premier 2001 wooden snare drum in grey shimmer Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hello,

I'm glad that I finally finished the restoring process on my 'Premier 2001' snare drum, matching my Premier drumkit '303 Outfit' with the same finish: grey shimmer. This smare drum came to me in a poor condition: it must have been store for years in a barn, 'cause even inside of the shell there had been traces from beetle, some earth etc., rust at all corners. I stripped the drum completely, replaced parts of the strainer, but the main issue was to find those leaf springs, which were missing (it took me more than three months to manage it).

But now it's back in it's genuine condition again. The die cast hoops still show some pitting, but compared to the overall condition when the drum reached me, this chrome is still in an astonishing good condition. Exciting Premier chrome work at that time!

Guess it was produced in the late 60s, as the badge doesn't show a number.

Good job Ralf. How did you find dismantling the flo-beam mechanism? I'm about to start on my very pitted 2000 snare and have been told to leave the mechanism alone unless i want a world of pain and frustration.

That snare came out great. I love Premier's shimmer finishes. They are probably my favorite from the late 60's and 70's. Very classy.

Indeed, the 'grey shimmer' looks very noble, and I like it best.

@Fayray: indeed, it's tricky and you need patience and filigree handling/ technique ...

Oh - btw: anyone here who needs spare parts on the strainer system? I do have some of the interior parts left now, as e.g. leaf springs, aluminium bar, etc.

thanks Ralf. I'll be onto the snare soon (leaving it until last as it's going to be the hardest to make look good on this kit). It's heavily pitted but i'll see how presentable i can make it before trying anything too radical like stripping the chrome. Ideally a 2001 like yours would be the ticket, in Aquamarine shimmer. I may be looking for a while for that one though.

Yes, chrome pitting to the Aluminium shell is a common thing to these snare drums.

I'll keep my eyes open for a 2001 in Aquamarine shimmer (looked for mine more than one year). Patience is the key word!
